SEATTLE, Wash. – Senior Carlos Donat and freshman Nicklas Oberg each won two singles matches on Friday and advanced to the Round of 16 at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships hosted by the University of Washington at the Nordstrom Tennis Center and Seattle Tennis Center.
Donat cruised to a pair of straight set wins against a pair of Washington opponents, while Oberg battled through a three-setter against a West Coast Conference foe in the morning and then knocked off the tournament's No. 4 seed later.
Donat defeated senior Sebastian Hawken by a 6-0, 6-4 margin and then beat freshman Kasper Smith 6-0, 6-3.
Oberg pulled out a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 victory against Pacific's Ross Watson in his first match of the day. He then posted a 6-4, 6-3 win against No. 4-seeded Paul Barretto of California in the evening.
"I felt like we had a really nice day today," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "Carlos did what Carlos does. He got on top of a couple of pretty good opponents and took it to them early and rolled it out. Nick had maybe the best day a freshman at UP has ever had. He came back from down a break in the third set to beat Pacific's top guy. Then he took out the No. 4 seed from Cal in straight sets a couple of hours later."
Donat advances to face the tournament's top-seed and No. 63-ranked Sameer Kumar of Stanford on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
Oberg, a five-star recruit from Plano, Texas, will take on seeded Andrew Gu of Santa Clara on Saturday, also at 1:30 p.m. Gu was an All-WCC First Team selection last year for the Broncos.
Portland fared well in consolation singles matches on Friday with freshmen Leo Hibi, Eleftherios Neos and Issa Yoshida posting straight set victories. Freshman Sema Pankin lost a hard-fought match in a three-set super tiebreaker.
"Issa and Leo had their best performances of the season so far today," Gross noted. "Lefteris had a very nice win and Sema was right there until the end against a good player. I'd like to think our young guys are starting to realize that they belong at this level, but tomorrow is another day and we will get back after it again, which is what you have to do to prove you are a great player and a great team."
All nine Pilots on the roster travelled and competed in
opening round action on Thursday. The tournament continues with singles and doubles action tomorrow and throughout the weekend. Live video of all matches at the Nordstrom Tennis Center is available at
GoHuskies.com, but no live scoring is available. Singles and doubles finals will be played on Monday, Oct. 15.
The ITA Northwest Regional Championships features players from the following schools: California, Eastern Washington, Fresno State, Gonzaga, Oregon, Pacific, Portland, Portland State, Sacramento State, San Francisco, Santa Clara, Seattle U., Saint Mary's, Stanford, UC Davis and Washington.
Last year, Portland senior Michail Pervolarakis became the first player in school history to win the ITA Northwest Regionals singles title.
