PORTLAND, Ore. – Sophomore guard Marcus Shaver Jr. scored a game-high 24 points as Portland jumped out early and never looked back in a 94-64 victory over Antelope Valley in a men's basketball exhibition game Saturday night at the Chiles Center. It was a homecoming for all-time Pilot great, Darwin Cook, who is in his second season as head coach of the Pioneers.
Cook, a Portland Hall of Famer who went on to an eight-year NBA career, was honored prior to tip-off and presented with a commemorative framed photograph by current Portland head coach Terry Porter. Many of his former teammates and UP alumni were in attendance for his return.
The Pilots also honored Cook's former head coach on The Bluff, Jack Avina, with a pregame moment of silence. The
longest tenured and most decorated coach in Portland history, Avina passed away earlier this month at the age of 89.
On the court, Shaver Jr. finished 8-for-11 overall and drilled all four of his three-point attempts. He added six assists and two steals. Portland junior guard Josh McSwiggan finished 15 points, while sophomore guards JoJo Walker and Malcolm Porter added 10 apiece.
The newest version of the Pilots overcame a sluggish start to jump out to a double-digit lead midway through the first half and continued to widen the margin. Shaver Jr. finished with 15 first-half points as the Pilots led 39-22 lead at the half.
The margin grew to as much as 39 points midway through the second half as 12 different Pilots saw action. Six Portland players debuted at the Division I level for the first time.
True freshman Theo Akwuba earned the start at center and finished with a game-high eight rebounds to go with five points and a pair of blocked shots. Sophomore transfer Jacob Tryon also started in the frontcourt and finished with eight points, six rebounds, three assists and three blocks.
Redshirt freshman big man Hugh Hogland added four points off the bench, while redshirt freshman Takiula Fahrensohn and true freshmen Miles Turner and Wyatt Watson also made it in the scorebook.
Portland shot 53 percent overall, including 63 percent en route to a 55-point second half. The Pilots drilled 11-of-18 three-pointers in the period and finished 17-of-33 overall from beyond the arc.
The Pilots held the Pioneers to 31 percent shooting overall, but Antelope Valley gained a 45-41 rebounding margin.
Brandon Wade led Antelope Valley with 14 points and six rebounds. The Pioneers were competing for the second time this season after dropping an 88-77 decision at Cal State Northridge on Thursday.
Portland returns to the court for its final exhibition game on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. against Westmont. Tickets for all upcoming Pilot home games are available at
