PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Portland Pilots volleyball team finished their weekend with a bang, taking their second straight WCC match against the Santa Clara Broncos on Saturday afternoon at the Chiles Center. The Pilots swept in three sets, winning 25-15, 25-20, and 25-21.
The Pilots (14-4, 2-4 WCC) went undefeated in sets this weekend, going a perfect 6-0 that included a sweep over San Francisco.
"We did a nice job executing in a lot of phases," head coach Jeff Baxter said post-match. "I'm proud of the way we competed with some new faces out on the floor for us."
Sophomore Carey Williams shined over the weekend, following up her stellar performance against USF with 15 digs and three assists. Senior Reghan Pukis led the Pilots in kills with 11, junior Katie Barker had seven kills and five total blocks, and junior Cali Thompson recorded a double-double, having 33 assists and 10 digs.
The Pilots took control of the first set from the start, coming out to a 10-3 lead with five different Pilots recording kills. Santa Clara (5-13, 0-5) would remain competitive throughout the set, getting as close as 15-9. Barker would answer the call, recording two kills, a service ace and a block the remainder of the set to command the Pilots to a 25-15 set victory.
Both teams would start the second set jostling for position, the lead being exchanged seven times throughout the set. Junior Shayla Hoeft would keep the Pilots afloat, recording two kills and a block during the beginning of the set, leading to the Pilots retaking the lead at 10-9 thanks to Reghan Pukis's sixth kill of the match. Santa Clara would retake the lead, thanks to a 3-0 run by the Broncos to make it 14-12. Coming down to the wire, the Pilots would go on a 7-0 run to claim the lead and extend it to 21-16. Despite another late Bronco run, Pukis would close the door with a finesse kill that would give the Pilots the second set, 25-20.
Coming out to a 5-2 lead, the Pilots grabbed hold of the third set early. The Broncos would once again rally, at one point making it an 8-7 score. The Pilots, led by two kills by sophomore Liz Reich, would soon go on a 7-1 run to take back momentum and push their lead to 15-8. Not to be outdone, the Broncos would go on a few runs of their own to tighten the score, getting as close as 23-21. Refusing to lose, the Pilots would secure the win and go on to win the final set, 25-21.
The Pilots head back on the road next weekend, playing Pacific (6-10, 1-4) on Thursday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. and then visit Saint Mary's (11-5, 3-3) on Saturday, Sept. 29 at noon.
