PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland junior Benji Michel and sophomore Taryn Ries are the U.S. Bank Student-Athletes of the Month for September after the pair of forwards both rank among the nation's leaders in goals scored.
Â
Michel collected six goals and an assist during the month to help the Pilots go unbeaten in September, posting a 6-0-1 record. Michel scored in six of the seven games, and during a win at No. 24 Coastal Carolina he tallied a goal and an assist. Five of his six goals were game-winners, and he currently leads the West Coast Conference and ranks sixth nationally with 10 goals on the year.
Â
Ries scored nine goals in September, which included her first career hat trick at San Diego. She also scored a pair of goals at Oregon State, and she recorded four game-winners to help Portland go 6-3 and climb to the top of the WCC standings. Ries ranks second nationally in both goals (13) and game-winners (6), and she easily leads the conference in both categories.
Â
The Portland men are No. 10 in the latest NCAA RPI rankings and they have home games this weekend against LMU on Friday night and San Diego on Sunday. The Pilots are one of only four remaining teams in the nation without a loss.
Â
The women have a bye week, and with nine points in conference play they're tied for first place in the league. At 10-5 they also have the second most overall wins in the WCC, and they've already doubled their win total from a year ago. Their next game is scheduled for Oct. 19 at No. 4 Santa Clara.
