PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Portland women's basketball program is adding three recruits as Megan Engesser (Colorado Springs, Colo./Colorado Springs Christian HS), Keeley Frawley (Melbourne, Australia/Haileybury College), and Kelsey Lenzie (Seattle, Wash./West Seattle HS) have each signed a National Letter of Intent and will join the Pilots as freshmen, announced head coach Cheryl Sorenson.
"The 2019 class we have put together will be exciting to watch from day one," said Sorenson. "All three played at the highest level of high school ball and excelled against the top-notch competition. Megan Engesser is a shooter who will make close to 300 three-pointers in her high school career, Kelsey Lenzie is a gritty combo guard who has a chance to win a state championship, and Keeley Frawley, who just graduated, is as tough as they come in addition to her tremendous talent. More important than the talent they will add to the team, they are really great young ladies. We are blessed to have a blend of talent, academics, and high character young women in this year's signing class, and they'll be fun to watch."
Megan Engesser is a 5-10 guard/forward who comes to The Bluff from Colorado Springs, Colo., where she's a three-time All-Tri-Peaks Conference First Team selection. A two-time all-state selection, Engesser was named the Colorado 3A Player of the Year, and she has been named to the all-area team three times. Twice she's helped lead the Colorado Springs Christian Lions to a runner-up showing at the state tournament, and she already holds the school record for most career points with 1,420. As a junior last year, she averaged 21.4 points, 6.4 rebounds, 4.2 steaks and 2.9 assists. Her 87 three-pointers in 2017-18 are the third most in a season in Colorado history, and her 202 career threes, in three seasons, already rank 12th in state high school history. Engesser poured in a school record 39 points during a game, and she once went a perfect 7-for-7 from beyond the three-point arc, which is also a state record.
A standout and the leading scorer on the Colorado Basketball Club adidas 17's Elite, Engesser once made 33 three's during six games to help lead her squad to a fifth-place finish at the adidas National Tournament in Atlanta.
"Megan comes from a basketball family," Sorenson said. "Her father and both brothers played college ball. She loves the process and loves to compete. Megan, who is closing in on several Colorado state records, will add a perimeter scoring threat for us next season. We're looking forward to seeing some of those in the Chiles Center."
Kelsey Lenzie is a 5-7 guard who will be a four-year letterwinner for the West Seattle High School Wildcats. She's a Third-Team All-Metro League selection, and she once scored a career-high 28 points. With the Tree of Hope EYBL, she took first place in the Gold Division in Indianapolis, Ind., in 2018. Lenzie also won two End of the Trail Tournaments, in 2015 and 2016, with the ECBA Swish.
"Kelsey is hard-nosed competitor," said Sorenson. "I love her tenacity on the court. She can knock down shots on the perimeter as well as penetrate and find open teammates. She plays on one of the premier EYBL teams in the country and her high school team should compete for a state championship this spring. Like Megan, Kelsey will be able to stretch the defense with her scoring ability. We are excited to welcome Kelsey to the Pilot Family."
Keeley Frawley is a 6-0 guard from Melbourne, Australia. In the APS league, Frawley was the leading scorer and rebounder, with per game averages of 18 points and 12 boards. She can also hit from deep as she was the top shooter at the 2017 Australian Junior Championships, connecting on 47 percent of her three-point attempts playing for Victoria Metro. Frawley was the top rebounder in the 2014 club championships, and she was the top scorer during the grand final. She's collected a number of team titles and gold medals, including at the 2018 Australian Public Schools Championship, the 2012 Victorian Championship, and the 2016 Australian Junior Championship. Her club won silver at the 2014 Club Championship, and they claimed bronze at both the 2015 and 2017 Junior Championships. She received honors in both 2017 and 2018, and she was the Haileybury College MVP. Her team won the APS medallion in 2018.
"Keeley comes to us from Melbourne, Australia, where she has won several different medals playing with Victoria Metro," noted Sorenson. "While she is a perimeter threat, Keeley excels at attacking the rim. She is a very strong player who can fill the stat sheet and dominate the boards. Her experience of playing on high level semi-pro teams in Melbourne will prepare her well for the WCC."
