Â
"We are excited about the future of this class," Loomis said. "This group of top-shelf student athletes will allow us to build upon the foundation of our two previous nationally ranked classes with a combination of big-time talent and overall makeup. This group is physical and athletic. We've added a cache of players who excel on the field, in the classroom, and in the community."
Â
Christian Cooney is an outfielder at Central Catholic High School, and he landed on Oregon's 6A All-State First Team as a junior last spring. Cooney hit .474, which ranked third in Oregon, in 2018 to help lead the Rams to the state quarterfinals. He was also tied for second in the state with seven home runs, and he was fourth in both on-base percentage (.538) and stolen bases (21). Cooney also landed on the 2018 All-Mt. Hood Conference First Team, and he received all-league second team accolades as a sophomore.
Â
"Christian is a local addition from Central Catholic High School," noted Loomis. "Christian is a skilled athlete with a high ceiling and we're excited to see him take his game to the next level."
Â
Ethan Doshi comes to The Bluff from Seattle, Wash., where he's an infielder at Ballard High School. As a junior last spring, Doshi was named to the All-Metro League First Team after leading the Beavers with a .402 batting average. He also claimed an on-base percentage of .506, belted two home runs, drove in 17 RBI's, and collected seven doubles, while also playing flawless defense.
Â
"Ethan is a very physical hitter who projects somewhere in the middle of the line-up," Loomis said. "He has the ability to play multiple positions as well. We are very excited to add such a mature and proven bat to our line-up."
Â
Jack Folkins is a right-handed pitcher for the O'Dea Fighting Irish in Seattle. Folkins had a stand-out junior season, going 6-0 on the mound for the Irish, as they won the Metro League Title and advanced to state. He K'd 43 in 29.2 innings, posted a miniscule ERA of 0.47, and tossed a one-hit, complete game shutout in the Washington State Tournament. Twice he fanned 11 in a game, and he was named to the 2018 All-Metro League First Team and to the Star Times All-Area Team.
Â
"Jack is a very proven arm that already holds a good three pitch mix," added Loomis. "Jack comes from both a high school and travel club that has had a lot of success. We look for Jack to continue his winning ways on The Bluff."
Â
A left-handed pitcher at Bainbridge High School in Washington, Liam Hatakenaka went 7-1 in 2017, while claiming an ERA of 0.88, an opponents' batting average of .185, and 41 strikeouts in 40.2 innings. He also landed on the All-Metro League First Team that year, while also being named to the All-West Sound First Team. In the 2018 Metro League Tournament against Nathan Hale, he K'd 16 and tossed a one-hitter. Hatakenaka also received 2017-18 Perfect Game Underclassmen All-America Honorable Mention.
Â
"Liam is a six-foot-five left-handed pitcher from Bainbridge Island," noted Loomis. "He's an accomplished pitcher, and with his continued development we see an extremely high ceiling for his career at UP."
Â
Kyle Kloeppel is from Gilbert, Ariz., where he's a right-handed pitcher for the Campo Verde Coyotes. In 2017 he helped the Coyotes finish second in the state at the 5A level, and last spring he struck out eight of the nine batters he faced during 3.0 innings of relief against Queen Creek. In 2.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen against Gilbert High School, he fanned seven, while also belting a solo homer. Kloeppel is a four-time recipient of the team's player of the game award.
Â
"Kyle is a very projectable right-handed pitcher from Phoenix, Arizona," Loomis said. "At six-foot-three and with a low 90's arm, we see a bright future on the mound for Kyle."
Â
Ethan Loveless is an outfielder who hails from Olympia, Wash., and he's led the Black Hills HS Wolves in RBI's and total bases for the last three seasons. As a junior last spring, Loveless was named to the All-Area Second Team and the All-Evergreen Conference Frist Team, after garnering all-league second team honors during his sophomore campaign. Loveless, who is also a standout on the football field for the Wolves, helped the baseball team reach the 2017 state playoffs.
Â
"Ethan is a multi-sport athlete who loves to compete," said Loomis. "We are extremely excited to have such a well-rounded athlete join our program."
Â
Sean Mulcare plays both in the infield and outfield at Inglemoor High School in Kenmore, Wash. In 2018, Mulcare earned both all-state and all-league recognition, and helped the Vikings win the Kinco 4A League title. He led the team in both stolen bases and hits during his sophomore and junior campaigns, and he was the leader in runs scored in 2017.
Â
"Sean can play a number of positions, but the thing that he can really do is hit," Loomis said. "He has a middle of the order type of bat, and we're thrilled for Sean to bring his instant offense to The Bluff."
Â
Ben Patacsil, who's an infielder, is a high school teammate with fellow Portland recruit Jack Folkins at O'Dea High School. The pair helped the Fighting Irish to a league title in 2018 and a pair of visits to the state tournament. Patacsil has earned All-Metro League honors all three years on varsity, landing on the conference's first team last spring. He led O'Dea in hits, on-base percentage, and quality at bats, and he went 9-for-10 during the 2018 Metro League Tourney, which included a home run during the championship game.
Â
"Ben is a six-foot-one middle infielder who will be an immediate contributor to our program," said Loomis. "Ben can flat out hit. He's especially dangerous when the game is on the line. We fully expect Ben to be a mainstay in our lineup for years to come."
Â
Ty Saunders joins the Pilots from Anacortes, Wash., where he's a short stop for the Anacortes High School Seahawks. During his junior campaign, Saunders was named to the Northwest Conference First Team and landed All-Skagit County accolades as an infielder, while also earning all-league honorable mention as a pitcher. He previously nabbed all-league recognition as both a freshman and a sophomore, and helped the Seahawks go a perfect 13-0 in league in 2018 to claim the Northwest Conference championship. Anacortes made a district appearance in 2016, and they won the regional title and finished third in the state in 2017. Last spring Saunders hit .343 with 31 runs scored and 21 RBI's in 23 games played.
Â
"Ty is one of the best defensive short stops in the northwest, and he's quite possibly the best," Loomis said. "He can run and is really maturing at the plate. Ty will be a great addition to our infield."
Â
Wyatt Stanley will come to The Bluff with two years of eligibility remaining after spending two seasons at Edmonds Community College. A right-handed pitcher for the Tritons, Stanley went 8-1 as a freshman last spring with a 1.58 ERA with 53 K's. He was named to the All-NWAC North First Team, while also nabbing a North Gold Glove and an NWAC Gold Glove. A team captain, he helped lead ECC to a NWAC North championship as they collected 40 wins.
Â
"Wyatt is a big physical right-handed pitcher from Edmonds Community College," said Loomis. "We see Wyatt being an instant addition to the pitching staff. He has shown the ability to both start and relieve at a high level. Wyatt throws in the low to mid 90's with heavy sink., and we are extremely excited to add such a top-end arm to our family."
Â
Jake Tsukada calls Honolulu, Hawai'i, home, and he's an infielder at the Punahou School. Tsukada and the Buff n Blue reached the state playoffs in both 2016 and 2018. He was named to the all-state second team as a junior, while also earning All-ILH First Team recognition after hitting .381. Last spring he led the team in hits (24), runs scored (23), RBI's (20), doubles (6), and triples, and as a sophomore in 2017 he nabbed All-ILH Honorable Mention.
Â
"Jake is a very versatile athlete coming from Hawai'i," said Loomis. "He played for one of the better travel teams in the country. Jake is always on the leaderboard for hits and runs scored, and we're excited to have him become a Pilot."
