BOULDER, Colo. – Josh McSwiggan scored a team-high 22 points for Portland, but the Colorado Buffaloes used a 16-1 run to break an early second half tie and pull away for a 93-69 victory over the Pilots Wednesday night at the CU Events Center.
The Pilots (5-4) trailed by three at the half and were down nine with less than 10 minutes left in regulation, but the Buffaloes (4-1) closed the game in dominant fashion.
McSwiggan drilled 5-of-11 three-pointers and recorded his second 20-point game of the season. He was the lone Pilot to reach double figures.
McKinley Wright finished with 22 points for Colorado, while Lucas Siewert added 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Portland battled foul trouble all game and finished with 25 fouls compared to just 13 for Colorado. The Buffaloes made 23-of-30 free throws, while the Pilots finished 9-of-13 at the line.
Colorado also used transition offense effectively, finishing with a 25-11 edge in fast break points.
The Pilots shot 48 percent from the field for the game and held Colorado to 42 percent overall. The Buffaloes gained a 44-27 rebounding margin and forced 17 Pilot turnovers, seven coming on offensive foul calls.
McSwiggan sandwiched a pair of early second half three-pointers around a Franklin Porter three to tie the game at 51, but Colorado answered with a 16-1 run spurred by forcing five Pilot turnovers. The margin grew to as much as 32 down the stretch.
The Pilots battled through foul trouble in the first half and trailed by just a 39-36 margin at the break. McSwiggan scored 13 first half points to lead the way.
Sophomore walk-on Brian Smith recorded a career-high seven points off the bench for the Pilots.
Portland will have a week off before visiting crosstown rival Portland State on Wednesday, Dec. 5 for a 7 p.m. tip-off at the Viking Pavilion. Portland then opens a four-game homestand against Sacramento State on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 7 p.m.
