PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland State Vikings dominated the glass and held off a late Portland rally for an 87-78 victory on Wednesday night at Viking Pavilion. The Vikings outrebounded the Pilots by a 55-27 margin and gained a 28-6 edge in second chance points.
Despite Portland shooting 48 percent from the field and holding the Vikings (5-3) to 41 percent overall, the Pilots (5-5) could not overcome the margins on the boards.
Sophomore guard JoJo Walker led four Pilots in double figures with 17 points and seven assists. Josh McSwiggan and Marcus Shaver Jr. scored 14 apiece, while Malcolm Porter added 10 points off the bench.
Holland Woods scored a game-high 27 points to lead the Vikings as five players reached double figures. Jamie Orme finished with 10 points and 13 rebounds, while Sal Nuhu added 10 points, nine rebounds and six blocked shots off the bench.
Portland State used a 17-3 run early in the second half to take a 65-50 lead. The margin grew to 19 points with 8:54 left, but the Pilots responded with a 9-0 run capped by a Malcolm Porter runner to make it a 10-point deficit.
A pair of Shaver free throws cut the lead to 81-76 with 1:08 to go, but that would be as close as the Pilots would get.
Offensive rebounding set the tone early as the Vikings overcame an early eight-point deficit by scoring 17 second chance points in the first half. Woods buried five first half three-pointers to lead PSU to a 46-43 halftime lead.
Portland returns to the Chiles Center on Saturday to host the Sacramento State Hornets at 7 p.m. Tickets for all upcoming Pilot home games are available at
