PORTLAND, Ore. – The Seattle University Redhawks scored the first 15 points of the game and then held off a late Portland rally for a 67-56 non-conference win Monday night at the Chiles Center. Josh McSwiggan led the Pilots with 14 points, while JoJo Walker added 13 points and five steals in the loss.
The Pilots (6-7) converted just 7-of-19 free throws for the game, but managed to cut the deficit to seven in the closing minutes. Portland forced nine Seattle U turnovers in the second half to spark a late rally. Hugh Hogland had a putback dunk and then McSwiggan buried a corner three to make it 59-57 with 2:09 remaining.
Terrell Brown answered with a runner in the lane on the following possession and Portland would get no closer than nine down the stretch.
Brown finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Redhawks (10-3), while Morgan Means finished with 16 points. Myles Carter added 11 points and 12 rebounds.
Seattle U shot 43 percent overall and made 18-of-27 free throws, while the Pilots finished at 36 percent from the field. The Redhawks controlled the boards with a 43-34 rebounding advantage.
Portland surrendered a 15-0 lead to open the game and trailed by as much as 21 points in the opening period. The Pilots made just three field goals in the first 14:05 of the game.
A bright spot for Portland was the return of junior Xavier Hallinan, who became eligible following the conclusion of the fall semester. Hallinan made his season debut and buried a first half three-pointer and also dished out an assists in nine minutes off the bench.
Sophomore center Jacob Tryon also converted his first two field goals of the year and finished with four points and four rebounds in nine minutes. Tryon missed 10 games with a foot injury.
Portland will conclude its four-game homestand on Friday against the Florida A&M Rattlers with a 5 p.m. tip-off. Kids 12 and under will receive free admission to the game, while tickets for all upcoming home games are available at
