PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots were dominant defensively in a 54-39 non-conference men's basketball win against Florida A&M Friday night at the Chiles Center. The 39 points allowed was the fewest since Jan. 21, 2010 when the Pilots also gave up just 39 points to Loyola Marymount.
Josh McSwiggan provided the offense for the Pilots (7-7) with 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including 4-of-6 from three-point range. Sophomore guards Marcus Shaver Jr. and JoJo Walker added 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Junior Franklin Porter grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds for Portland.
Both teams struggled to get into an offensive rhythm in the early going, but the Pilots would hold the Rattlers (3-11) scoreless for the final 5:07 of the first half and closed the period on an 11-0 for a 29-18 halftime lead.
Portland used a 10-0 run early in the second half capped by a Porter three to gain the largest lead of the night at 42-24 with 13:39 remaining. Florida A&M cut the deficit to 10, but Walker converted a pair of shot clock-beating layups on consecutive possessions to put the game away.
Redshirt freshman Hugh Hogland made his first career start at center and assisted on the first two Pilot baskets.
Portland shot 37 percent overall and made 10-of-25 three-pointers, while FAMU finished at 29 percent from the field and 4-of-13 from beyond the arc.
The Rattlers gained a 38-35 rebounding margin, but Portland had a 16-4 advantage in points off of turnovers.
M.J. Randolph and Nasir Core had 10 points each to lead FAMU.
Portland will conclude the non-conference schedule at Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, Dec. 29 with a 6 p.m. tip-off. The Pilots open West Coast Conference play at Loyola Marymount on Saturday, Jan. 5 at 3 p.m.
