FAIRVIEW, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots men's and women's cross country teams competed in their first races of the season this morning at the Portland State 'Rust Buster' at Blue Lake Park.
Redshirt juniors Said Guermali and Devin Wulff led the men's squad with first (18:56.8) and third place (18:58.2) finishes, respectively. Both Pilots recorded new personal records. Three other Pilots also finished in the top-10 for Portland, including redshirt-sophomore Cole Shugart, redshirt-freshmen Thomas Salas and Jake Knoblich, and redshirt-junior Ryan Clarke.
"Great start by the Pilots! Super excited to see Said win the race," said men's head coach Rob Conner. "He put in a big summer and it showed. Devin led most of the race at looked strong too. Great work by all the guys. They ran strong and smart."
On the women's side, redshirt-sophomore Susan Van Weperen and redshirt -freshman Katelyn Schultz were the top finishers for the Pilots, crossing the finish line in fourth (14:15.3) and 10
th (14:34.1) respectively.
"The team did great and I was excited to see everyone run hard and compete," said women's head coach Ian Solof. "This was a good start and we will give some of our other runners a chance to open up in five days at UO"
Both teams will be back in action on September 6 at the Oregon Preview in Eugene, Ore.
