BOISE, Idaho -- The Portland Pilots extended the best start in program history by defeating the Boise State Broncos in a thrilling five set match on Friday night. The Pilots won the match by a 3-2 margin at 25-17, 25-27, 13-25, 25-21, and 15-11.
The Pilots (11-0) are one of seven remaining undefeated teams in the nation and broke the program record for longest winning streak, which was formerly 10 consecutive wins during the 2015 season. The Broncos fell to 7-3 overall with the loss.
Down two sets to one, the Pilots dug in and overcame multiple Bronco runs to complete the five-set comeback. "Our players did a fantastic job remaining in the moment and executed their jobs at a high level," head coach Jeff Baxter said after the match. "I'm very proud of the way we competed against a very good Boise State team."
Senior Reghan Pukis once again led the Pilots in kills with 20, while junior Shayla Hoeft finished with 19 kills, while hitting .486. Junior setter Cali Thompson recorded her fourth straight double-double with 55 assists and 10 digs. Pukis slammed five kills in the fifth and deciding set as the Pilots separated late to clinch the win.
For the second straight match of the day (Portland swept Sacramento State in the morngin), the Pilots came out the gates strong and took an early 11-8 lead. The Broncos would go on a 3-0 run to tie the set, and would challenge the Pilots throughout the set. Despite their efforts, the Pilots would end the set on a 9-2 run and take the first set 25-17.
The second set came down to the wire as the Broncos fought off three set points and scored the final five points win it 27-25.
Boise State would take the momentum gained in the second set and come out running in the third, racing to a 25-13 margin.
Shayla Hoeft would help get Portland back on track in the fourth set as she pounded seven kills to lead the Pilots to a 25-21 set victory and set up the thrilling finish.
Going into the fifth and final set, the Pilots refused to give in. Led by Reghan Pukis's five kills, the Pilots would take the final set 15-11.
The Pilots will look to clinch their fourth tournament title of the season and conclude the non-conference schedule unblemished on Saturday. Portland closes out the Boise State Classic against Cal State Northridge at 9:00 AM (PST) at Bronco Gym.
