HONOLULU, HI – The Portland Pilots have won their third tournament in a row, finishing the Outrigger Volleyball Challenge by sweeping the University of Idaho. The Pilots would win the match in three sets over the Vandals, 25-18, 25-19, and 25-15.
Now 9-0 on the season, the Pilots continue to extend their best start in program history with wins over San Diego State, Hawai'i and Idaho this weekend.
Head coach Jeff Baxter was happy with how well the Pilots performed against a solid opponent, saying "Idaho is a tough team, I was excited with our level of execution against them. We are looking forward to upgrading a lot of things in practice this week."
Senior Reghan Pukis was honored with the Outrigger Volleyball Challenge MVP, while Juniors Shayla Hoeft and Cali Thompson were nominated to the All-Tournament Team.
Junior Cali Thompson recorded her second straight double-double, having 37 assists and 12 digs. Reghan Pukis had 15 kills, while sophomore Izzy Guzik had six kills and nine digs.
The first set began like most of the Pilots matches this weekend, with both teams exchaning points in the beginning moments. The Vandals would take the lead first, forcing the Pilots to take a timeout with the score at 11-15. After the timeout, the Pilots would go on a 3-0 run to bring them back in the set. The Pilots would finish the first set on a 7-0 run, with Reghan Pukis grabbing seven kills to win the set at 25-18.
Grabbing hold of the momentum in the first set, the Pilots went on a 6-0 run to start the second and would effectively take over. Despite the Vandals fighting their way back to make the set competitive, the Pilots would go on to win the set 25-19.
The Pilots would come out of the midway break meaning business, opening the third set on a 10-2 run, and never look back, winning the third and final set 25-15.
The Pilots will fly to Boise next weekend, as they will participate in the Boise State Classic from September 14
th through September 15
th. They'll play Sacarmento State, Boise State and California State University Northridge at the Bronco Gym.
