STANFORD, Calif. – The Portland doubles tandem of Tom Hann and Kostya Nesterenko advanced to the quarterfinals of the championship draw with a pair of wins on Saturday at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships hosted at the Taube Family Tennis Complex.
The duo defeated Oregon's Jesper Nielsen and Riki Oshima by an 8-5 margin and then held on for a tiebreak victory against the tournament's No. 5 seed from Stanford in the Round of 16. Hann and Nesterenko fell behind by a 4-0 margin to William Genesen and Axel Geller, but stormed back to win the match 10-8 in a tiebreaker. The team advances and will face the No. 58-ranked doubles team in the nation from California. Paul Barretto and Can Kaya team up as the No. 4 seed in the draw.
"The highlight of the day was definitely two huge wins for Tom and Kostya to move into the quarterfinals," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "They beat a good Oregon team to start the morning and then got down 4-0 very quickly against the Stanford team that included one of the best players in the country. But they hung around and found a way to come through clutch in some huge moments."
Portland had a strong
opening day at the tournament by advancing four singles players and three doubles teams to the Round of 32. All four singles players were knocked out of the championship draw on Saturday afternoon. Nesterenko fell in a three-setter to Nielsen, while sophomore Leo Hibi battled ninth-seeded Jacob Brumm of California, but fell 7-5, 6-3.
"Singles was a little tougher today," Gross noted. "I think Kostya was really feeling the effects of a long day yesterday and then two long doubles matches this morning and kind of lost his legs in the third set of his singles match. Leo played one of his best matches against a very good player from Cal, but couldn't get over the hump."
