PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland's Taryn Ries scored the game-winner in the 103rd minute as the Pilots defeated the San Francisco Dons 2-1 in a thrilling West Coast Conference women's soccer game played on Saturday night at Merlo Field. Larkin Russell assisted on the game-winner, which is the third winner of the season for Ries.
Â
Tied 1-1 in the second OT, Russell chased down a loose ball before sending a cross into the area. That's where Ries elevated and finished past the USF keeper with a header, giving the home side the dramatic win. It's the third assist this fall for Russell, and it's the team-best sixth goal for Ries.
Â
The game was back-and-forth throughout all 103 minutes, and it was Ashley Humphrey who gave the Dons (10-5-2, 3-2-1 WCC) the lead in the first half when she put away the rebound on her own shot. From near the left post, Humphrey had a pair of hits saved by Portland (5-5-4, 1-3-2 WCC) keeper Madison Zamora, but on the third attempt she found the back of the net to make it a 1-0 game.
Â
Previously it was the Pilots who almost scored the first goal, but Kimberly Hazlett's cross for Ries was a little too high in the third minute. Moments later on a corner kick, the ball fell to the feet of Jamie Rita. Rita then struck one from point blank range that was saved by the USF goalkeeper, Olivia Camera.
Â
Trailing 1-0 in the 26th minute, Rita again put a quality shot on-target. This attempt came from distance, and Camera made a stellar save to preserve the San Francisco lead.
Â
Late in the first half, the Dons came through with a pair of clutch saves. First it was Gabi Brummett with a shot from the middle of the box that was denied by a San Francisco defender. On the rebound, Rita hammered one towards the frame, and Camera made a diving stop as the half would soon end with the Dons claiming a slight edge.
Â
The Pilots then leveled the score courtesy a San Francisco own goal early in the second half. Brummett sent one towards the penalty spot from the right side of the 18-yard box, and it deflected in off a defender in the 47th minute.
Â
Moments later Rita again just missed scoring, with this shot coming from outside the box. It was tipped over the crossbar by Camera. On a Portland corner in the 62nd minute, Ries tried to finish first time after the ball bounces, but Camera came through once again with another clutch save.
Â
Camera wasn't finished as she secured a header from Natalie Muth on another stellar corner by the Pilots, with Brianna Miyama sending this one in 84th minute. The save kept the score tied as the two teams would then head to overtime.
Â
Camera finished with seven saves on the night, while Zamora countered with five. Zamora was making her first career start between the pipes.
Â
The Pilots next travel to Stockton, Calif., to play the Pacific Tigers on Friday night. Kickoff for the WCC match is set for 7 p.m.
