STOCKTON, Calif. --- Portland junior Taryn Ries found the back of the net twice, and senior Lucy Davidson scored her first career goal as the Pilots shutout the Pacific Tigers 3-0 in a West Coast Conference women's soccer game played on Friday night at Knoles Field. Ries claims the game-winner, and she now has eight goals on the year.
Â
The Pilots (6-5-4, 2-3-2 WCC) were aggressive early and created a handful of chances during the opening minutes. In the first and fifth minutes, the visiting side earned a corner, and both times the Pilots put a header towards the frame, with each attempt going wide.
Â
In the 15th minute, Kimberly Hazlett played a great ball into the area that fell to Ries, who sent a shot wide of the right post. Moments later Davidson found the feet of Gabi Brummett with a stellar ball played out of the back. Brummett gained possession near the top of the area before putting a shot on-target, but it was saved by the keeper as the game remained scoreless.
Â
Ries then gave the Pilots the lead with a wonderful strike in the 34th minute. Hazlett sparked the play with a header from near the halfway line that Ries ran onto. Ries then took a touch before burying a shot into the top shelf as the Pilots took a 1-0 advantage. Hazlett earned the assist on the goal, her second of the year.
Â
Portland continued to attack on offense in the second half, and they repeatedly sent dangerous balls into the box. Davidson provided the finishing touch on one of those crosses in the 71st minute to push the Pilots' edge to two goals. After an initial shot hit the right post, Davidson put away the loose ball to make it a 2-0 game.
Â
A few minutes later, Ries scored her second, with this one coming from the penalty spot after the Tigers were called for a foul inside the 18-yard box. Ries calmly slotted one in, and the Pilots had their 3-0 victory.
Â
The Pilots were also solid defensively as they limited Pacific (3-14-0, 0-7-0 WCC) to just four shots on the night. Portland's starting keeper Madison Zamora need to make just one save to register her first career shutout.
Â
The Plots remain on the road next week when they travel to Los Angeles, Calif., for a WCC match against the Loyola Marymount Lions on Wednesday night. Kickoff at Sullivan Field is scheduled for 7 p.m.
