PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland senior Rey Ortiz landed on the All-West Coast Conference Men's Soccer First Team and junior Luke Hendel was voted to the all-league second team as six Pilots total earned postseason recognition, it was announced on Tuesday. Seniors Gio Magana-Rivera and Francesco Tiozzo and freshman Jacobo Reyes earned all-conference honorable mention, while Reyes and Delentz Pierre also landed on the league's all-freshman team.
Ortiz, a midfielder from Acapulco, Mexico, ended his career No. 7 all-time in program history with 24 overall assists. This year he led the Pilots with 13 points, which came on three goals and seven assists. Ortiz was twice named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch list, in 2018 and 2019, and he earned All-American honors in 2017. He's a two-time all-west region first team selection, he landed on the All-WCC First Team as a sophomore, and he was voted to the all-conference second team as a junior. Ortiz's 13 assists as a sophomore in 2017 missed matching a program single-season record by one and ranked No. 3 in the nation.
This is the first all-league honor for Hendel, a junior forward/midfielder from Berlin, Germany. Hendel appeared in all 17 games this fall for the Pilots, collecting team highs of five goals and three game-winners. Hendel was named the WCC Player of the Week on Oct. 6 after registering the game-winner during a 2-1 victory over UC Riverside at Merlo Field, and he also earned Top Drawer Soccer's Team of the Week Honorable Mention recognition. Previously Hendel landed on the TDS Team of the Week after scoring both of Portland's game-winners against George Washington and Davidson.
A midfielder from Hood River, Ore., Magana-Rivera earned All-WCC recognition during three of his four years on The Bluff. He scored three goals and added an assist this fall, and he finished his career with 11 goals and seven assists overall. Magana-Rivera led the Pilots with five assists last year, and he earned both all-region, and All-WCC First Team honors. A 2019 Preseason All-WCC pick, Magana-Rivera landed on the league's all-freshman team in 2016.
Tiozzo, a center back from Chioggia, Italy, earns all-league honors in his final season on The Bluff. During his two years with the Pilots, Tiozzo played a key role in helping the team become one of the top defensive teams in the nation. Portland posted seven shutouts this fall, and Tiozzo was part of 13 clean sheets during his career.
Reyes is a midfielder who tallied 11 points in his first year at Portland. He scored three goals and collected five assists this fall, and against CSUN he notched two assists during the 3-1 win.
Reyes, who hails from Monterrey, Mexico, is joined on the WCC's All-Freshman Team by Pierre, a left back out of Casa Grande, Ariz. In addition to helping the team record seven shutouts, Pierre had two goals and an assist. Pierre landed on the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week after scoring his first career goal and helping the Pilots secure the win over CSUN.
