PORTLAND, Ore. – Junior forward Tahirou Diabate led five Portland players in double figures with 20 points and 13 rebounds as the Pilots pulled away for an 89-72 exhibition victory against George Fox Saturday night at the Chiles Center.
Diabate had a double-double by halftime with 17 points and 10 rebounds, but the Pilots needed all of his effort as they trailed a majority of the first half and were down 34-32 at the break.
Sophomore guard Takiula Fahrensohn sparked an early second half run with nine points in a three minute span to give the Pilots a 43-38 lead. The margin would grow to 22 points late in regulation as the Pilots outscored the Bruins 57-38 in the second period.
Fahrensohn finished with 12 points, all in the second half, and added three rebounds and three assists. Junior guard Malcolm Porter contributed 15 points and four rebounds, while junior forward Jacob Tryon added 12 points and five rebounds off the bench in just 15 minutes.
A pair of backcourt newcomers provided big boosts off the bench. Freshman point guard Chase Adams was aggressive at both ends of the court and finished with 10 points, six assists and two steals. His defensive energy and playmaking abilities in the first half led him to join the starting rotation and jumpstart the second half surge.
Junior college transfer Quincy Ferebee also had a solid all-around game. He finished with eight points, four rebounds and three assists, while committing zero turnovers.
Portland took the first lead of the game on a three-point play from Diabate, but George Fox then rattled off a 21-6 run capped by a Ryan Lacey three-pointer to take a 21-9 lead. Diabate carried the Pilots back to gain a late first half lead before JD Ahlstrom nailed a three to give the Bruins a 34-32 halftime lead.
GFU made 9-of-19 first half three-pointers compared to just 2-of-16 for the Pilots.
The script flipped after the break as Portland nailed 7-of-14 three-pointers and GFU was 7-for-19 from beyond the arc.
Portland shot 50 percent overall from the field as Diabate was an efficient 9-of-10 from the field. The Bruins shot 43 percent overall, but 42 percent from three-point range.
The Pilots committed 14 turnovers, but forced 16 and gained a 50-14 advantage in points in the paint.
