PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland raced to an 86-36 season-opening victory against Willamette University Tuesday night at the Chiles Center. All 11 Pilots that saw action scored, led by junior guard Malcolm Porter and junior forward Jacob Tryon with 13 points each.
The Pilots (1-0) wasted little time in setting the tone by rattling off a 23-3 run early and never looked back. Freshman point guard Chase Adams started and provided an immediate impact at both ends of the court with four steals, four points and four assists during the run. He finished the night with four points, three rebounds, seven assists and four steals.
Redshirt freshman forward Wyatt Watson capped the first half scoring with a three-pointer as Portland carried a 49-16 lead into the break. The margin would grow throughout the second half as head coach Terry Porter was able to balance the minutes and get contributions from everyone.
Portland shot 49 percent from the field and made 10-of-26 three-pointers, while holding the Bearcats to just 20 percent overall. The Pilots forced 21 turnovers and committed just 10, gaining a 26-3 margin in points off of turnovers.
Porter was 4-of-5 from the field and added four rebounds and three assists, while Tryon was 5-for-7 from the floor and grabbed five rebounds with two blocked shots.
Six players officially debuted for the Pilots on Tuesday. In addition to Adams, Watson knocked down a pair of three-pointers and finished with nine points and three rebounds.
Graduate transfer Isaiah White, who missed Saturday's exhibition game due to injury, came off the bench to score an efficient 11 points on 5-for-7 shooting in 12 minutes.
Another graduate transfer, Lavar Harewood, made both of his field goal attempts and finished with five points, five rebounds and two assists, while junior college transfer Quincy Ferebee chipped in four points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals.
Portland's only other true freshman, Cody Collinsworth, scored four points with two rebounds and an assist, blocked shot and steal in 11 minutes.
The team's leading returning scorer, junior guard JoJo Walker, also reached double figures with 10 points.
The Pilots will hit the road to face a tough test against USC on Friday night at the Galen Center. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. and the game will be televised live on the Pac-12 Network.
