LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Portland graduate transfer Isaiah White scored a game-high 22 points in Friday night's 76-65 loss to USC at the Galen Center. White buried six three-pointers and the Pilots put a scare in the Trojans as Portland was within one possession early in the second half.
Junior guard Malcolm Porter tied the game at 48-48 on a layup with 15:08 left in regulation. The Pilots (1-1) had multiple possessions to take the lead over the next three minutes, but couldn't convert.
The Trojans (2-2) used a 9-0 run take a 63-52 lead as standout freshman Onyeka Okongwu had three baskets during the run. Okongwu finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds, despite playing through foul trouble.
Sophomore guard Takiula Fahrensohn answered the run with a three-pointer out of a timeout. White then drilled his sixth three-pointer of the night and hit a pair of free throws to make it 68-60, but that would be as close as it would get down the stretch.
Fahrensohn and junior guard JoJo Walker joined White in double figures with 10 points each. Fahrensohn added six rebounds a blocked shot and two steals in 26 impact minutes off the bench.
Freshman point guard Chase Adams was once again a difference maker at both ends of the court for the Pilots. He collected four steals for the second time in as many games and added six points, five rebounds and four assists in 31 minutes.
Portland made 13-of-28 three-pointers and shot 41 percent overall for the game. The Pilots forced 20 USC turnovers, but committed 17.
The difference in the game was on the boards as the Trojans took advantage of their size and Portland's shorthanded front court to gain a 42-27 rebounding margin. The Trojans had a 38-12 margin in points in the paint and 14-4 edge in second chance points.
Portland was without sophomore centers Hugh Hogland (injury) and Theo Akwuba (academics).
The Trojans jumped out to an early 12-point lead in the first half, but Portland answered by forcing turnovers and knocking down timely three-pointers. Consecutive layups by Walker and Adams cut the deficit to 33-32 with 2:43 left in the first half. USC took a 41-35 lead into the break. White had 11 points in the first half and Fahrensohn added seven off the bench.
Elijah Weaver and Jonah Matthews had 12 points each for the Trojans. Highly-touted freshman Isaiah Mobley, son of former Pilot Eric Mobley, had five points and seven rebounds for USC.
The Pilots will conclude the weekend road trip at San Jose State for a Sunday afternoon game at 2 p.m.
