PORTLAND, Ore. – Isaiah White scored 19 points to lead four Portland players in double figures night as the Pilots defeated Florida A&M 66-60 on Monday night at the Chiles Center. With the victory, the Pilots (8-3) have already surpassed last year's overall win total.
White scored 16 of his points in the second half as the Pilots used a 12-0 run early in the period to take the lead for good.
Sophomore guard Takiula Fahrensohn returned after missing Friday night's game with an injury and recorded career highs of 15 points and seven rebounds.
Fahrensohn earned the start as the shorthanded Pilots were missing two of their top three scorers. Malcolm Porter and JoJo Walker were both unavailable on Monday.
Freshman point guard Chase Adams reached double figures for the second straight game with 11 points, while junior Jacob Tryon continued his stellar interior play with 10 points, eight rebounds and career-best five blocked shots.
The Rattlers (0-8) trailed 33-31 at the half, but came out firing and went up by six early in the second period. Tryon started Portland's run with a layup and then White buried a three-pointer. Fahrensohn made a runner in the lane and then White converted back-to-back layups and a free throw to put the Pilots on top 45-39.
FAMU pulled within one possession on three occasions, but the Pilot defense stepped up down the stretch as the lead grew to 61-53 with 4:26 remaining. The Rattlers crawled back to within 61-58, but Adams buried a pair of free throws and the Pilots got defensive stops on the next five possessions to seal the victory.
Fahrensohn established a new career high in scoring midway through the first half as he drilled four early three-pointers to put Portland up by as much as 10, but the Pilots went cold and took just a two-point lead into the half.
Portland shot 46 percent from the field and made 9-of-19 three-pointers, but once again struggled at the foul line. The Pilots converted just 15-of-29 free throws.
The Rattlers were held to 37 percent overall and just 2-of-12 from beyond the arc.
Portland will conclude a three-game homestand on Thursday in the late game of a doubleheader on The Bluff. The Pilot women host Willamette at 5 p.m. followed by the men against Jackson State at 7:30 p.m.
