HONOLULU, Hawai'i --- Portland starter Chris Clements tossed a gem and Dutton Elske and Matt Kelly provided all the offense the right-hander would need as the Pilots shutout the Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors 4-0 on Sunday afternoon at Les Murakami Stadium to claim the four-game series. Clements didn't allow a base runner for the first 5.0 innings in his debut with the Pilots.
Clements (1-0), a senior transfer, worked 6.0 innings overall, striking out eight. After five perfect innings, the 'Bows got a pair of runners on in the sixth with a hit and a walk, but Clements registered back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning and the threat.
The Pilots (3-1) jumped ahead early when Kelly left the yard with his first home run of the year in the top of the first inning, which was a solo shot to center field. Portland added two more runs in the second after Daniel Lopez and Henry Cheney reached base, courtesy a single and a walk, respectively. Elske then ripped a double down the left field line, scoring both Lopez and Cheney to make it a 3-0 game.
Elske claimed his second double of the afternoon in the top of the fourth inning, which also scored Lopez to push Portland's lead to 4-0.
Reliever Morgan White replaced Clements to begin the bottom of the seventh before working 2.0 innings, and Connor Knutson tossed the bottom of the ninth to preserve the shutout. The trio combined to hold Hawai'i to just three hits.
Hawai'i (1-3) starter Kash Koltermann (0-1) allowed all four Portland runs in 4.0 innings. Li'I Pontes came out of the bullpen to hold the Pilots scoreless during the final 5.0 innings.
The Pilots stay on the road next week when they travel to Edinburg, Texas, for the Al Ogletree Classic, hosted by UT Rio Grande Valley at the UTRGV Stadium. Portland will play two games on Friday, first squaring off against North Dakota State before playing UTRGV in the nightcap. Saturday brings another meeting with UTRGV before the Pilots end their stay in Edinburg against North Dakota State on Sunday.
