EDINBURG, Texas --- Hunter Montgomery homered and collected four RBI's and Connor Knutson registered his third save of the weekend as the Portland Pilots defeated the North Dakota State Bison 8-5 on the final day of the Al Ogletree Classic on Sunday at the UTRGV Baseball Stadium. Montgomery had three hits overall and was just a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.

Montgomery's first big hit came with the bases loaded in the bottom of the third inning. His single to left field scored two and handed the Pilots a 3-0 lead. A few batters later, Tracye Tammaro sent a single to right field with the bases loaded, which scored two more and made it a 5-0 game.

The Bison (1-5) responded with two runs in the top of the fifth inning and three more in the sixth to even the score 5-5.

The tie was short-lived as the Pilots answered in the home half of the sixth when Cody Hawken sent an RBI double down the left field line, which brought home Chad Stevens with the go-ahead run. Montgomery then stepped to the plate, and he drilled a two-run homer over the wall in left field to push the Portland lead to three. It's the second home run of the season for Montgomery.

Portland starting pitcher Chris Clements (2-0) worked into the seventh inning to notch the win, and Cole Wilkinson, Christian Peters, and Knutson combined to hold the Bison scoreless during the final 2.1 innings. Clements allowed five runs, four earned, on six hits, he struck out seven, and didn't issue a walk.

Portland combined for 11 hits overall, and Montgomery also doubled in the fifth inning. Stevens and Jace McKinney both had two hits, and Stevens, Hawken, and Montgomery each scored twice.

The Pilots went 3-1, topping NDSU twice and host UTRGV once, in Edinburg to improve to 6-2 on the year. It's the best start to a season for the Pilots since 2012.

The Pilots next remain in Texas for a four-game series against Stephen F. Austin, which begins on Thursday in Nacogdoches. First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m. (Pacific) at Jaycees Field.
