About University of Portland Athletics
Portland sponsors 16 NCAA Division I sports as a member of the West Coast Conference, while the indoor track teams compete in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. Portland student-athletes have earned a total of 181 All-America awards, 32 Academic All-America honors and 13 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships. Women's soccer has won two NCAA Championships (2002, 2005), men's cross country has gone to 19 NCAA Championships with three top-three finishes in the last five years, and many other programs have had postseason success. The nickname "Pilots" was adopted for athletics in 1935 and was named in honor of riverboat Pilots that commonly navigate Pacific Northwest waterways, specifically the Willamette River which the campus overlooks. Today, the University of Portland is the only NCAA-affiliated University which uses the "Pilots" nickname.
