PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots women's soccer team is adding five recruits to the program as Shay Adams, Gina Muzi, MJ Roe, and Jenny Wahlen have signed National Letters of Intent, while graduate transfer Anja Koehler is coming to The Bluff from Cal. Adams, Muzi, Roe, and Wahlen will all join the Pilots as freshmen, and Koehler will have one year of eligibility remaining.
"Our incoming players are going to provide a new and exciting element on the field as we continue to build the Pilot program," Portland head coach Michelle French said. "Not only will they be great additions on the field, but their tremendous personalities and attitudes towards team culture and academics will help to drive the program to another level."
Shay Adams
5-9, D
Seattle, Wash./Shorecrest HS
Club: Crossfire Academy
Shay Adams is a center back who plays club for Crossfire Academy, which competed in the ECNL before marking the transition for the U.S. Soccer Development Academy. Crossfire posted an unblemished record of 22-0-2 in 2018, and the club is a two-time national finalist (2017 & 2018) at the national playoffs. Adams took part in Elite Player Development in 2011 and 2012 and participated in National Training at the University of Washington 2011. At Shorecrest High School, Adams earned All-Wesco Conference in 2016 before solely focusing on club.
Adams on Portland: "After my first visit to UP, I knew it was the perfect place to spend the next four years. There is something so special about the community, people, and of course the women's soccer program that I can't wait to be a part of. I'm so incredibly excited to push myself on and off the field and create new relationships in Portland that I will have forever."
French on Adams: "Shay is a composed and consistent center-back who does all of the little things very well. Her variety in distribution and overall defensive presence will be a great asset for us!"
Anja Koehler
5-11, MF
Oceanside, Calif./Mission Vista HS
Previous College: California
Club: San Diego Surf
Anja Koehler spent the past four years playing for the Cal Bears, making 42 appearances and 22 starts in the midfield after redshirting in 2015. Her first career goal came in 2017, and she added two goals and an assist last fall. One of those two goals was a game-winner against Oregon. Koehler helped lead the Bears to a pair of NCAA Tournaments, and she earned the Pac-12 All-Academic Honorable Mention in 2017.
Previously Koehler played club for San Diego Surf, guiding her team to the 2010 National Cup and Region IV Championships. At Mission Vista High School, Koehler was a two-time, first-time all-league selection.
Koehler on Portland: "I'm excited to be playing my final season of collegiate soccer while pursuing an MBA at the University of Portland! It is an amazing school with a storied soccer legacy that Michelle French, the entire staff, and the team are committed to. Thank you to my family as well as my coaches and teammates at Cal who have helped me through the process. Go Pilots!!"
French on Koehler: "Anja is bringing a ton of experience following her time at Cal Berkeley. With her skill-set in the midfield, there's no doubt she will be a great connector, facilitator, and organizer."
Gina Muzi
5-9, GK
Delafield, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS
Club: FC Wisconsin ECNL
Gina Muzi is a goalkeeper who helped her FC Wisconsin club team advance to the ECNL National Playoffs in 2017 and 2018. Her team also finished above .500 in their ECNL Midwest Conference for the first time in club history. In her first ECNL event in 2016, Muzi and her club finished a perfect 3-0 at the ECNL Phoenix November for a nine-point weekend.
Muzi earned all-conference recognition in her one year playing for Kettle Moraine High School before committing to her club full time.
Muzi on Portland: "I'm so excited to have the opportunity to be part of such a well-respected women's program, especially in one of the greatest cities in the U.S. to play soccer. I knew after my first visit to UP that it was the perfect fit for me academically and athletically! I can't wait to be challenged as a player and grow as a person!"
Maite Zabala (Portland GK coach) on Muzi: "Gina has a tremendous upside moving into her collegiate career, having the physical tools to become a top shot blocker in the Division 1 collegiate game. Her ability to distribute with her feet will be incredibly effective playing out of the back. We look forward to not only seeing what Gina personally does as a goalkeeper at Portland, but also see her positive affect on the entire goalkeeping group."
MJ Roe
5-9, F
Anthem, Ariz./Anthem Prep Academy
Club: SC del Sol ECNL & Development Academy
MJ Roe was invited to a pair of U.S. U-18 Women's National Team camps during her junior and senior years in high school. The forward also participated in a U.S. U-19 National Team Camp and was rostered for their trip to The Netherlands in November of 2018. Her SC del Sol club team is currently 15-1 and holds the No. 1 playoff spot in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy. Roe was selected to participate in the ECNL Player Development Program in 2016, which features the top 55 freshmen and sophomores in the region, and she's been her club team's top goal scorer the past two years.
Roe played two years (freshman and sophomore) for her Anthem Prep squad before focusing entirely on club. In those two years, she compiled 59 goals and 22 assists in 25 overall games, and she once tallied seven goals in a game as her team advanced to the state championship, where they'd claim the title in 2016. She also earned all-section, all-division, and all-conference first-team accolades, and was named the NSCAA Player of the Week during her freshman campaign.
Roe on Portland: "I absolutely love the overall feel of the campus - the green, the weather, the cozy, homey feeling. I can't wait to spend the next four years of my life surrounded by all that! I am beyond excited to have the opportunity to play soccer at such a high level in a such an amazing environment, and with such amazing coaches. Jenny Wahlen

Club: Gustafs GOIF
Jenny Wahlen has extensive experience within the Swedish National Team system, most recently playing with the U-19's. Previously Wahlen was with the Swedish U-18 and U-17 National Teams, and she's played club for Svardsjo IF (2015), Kvarnsvedens IK (2015-19), and Gustafs GOIF (Fall of 2018). With Kvarnsvedens IK, Wahlen helped the team win the second tier championship to reach the first national tier. She was responsible for the club's first clean sheet in the Swedish First Tier.
Wahlen on Portland: "I'm really excited about getting to Portland and becoming a part of the Portland Pilots! Zabala on Wahlen: "Jenny comes to us from Sweden with a unique background which will bring a different set of tools to our goalkeeping group. Her participation on the Swedish youth national team and her current Swedish domestic league play will arm her with experience as a goalkeeper that typically comes at a later stage of a goalkeeper's career. Her unique experiences will help her make an immediate impact on the team from the onset of preseason."
