PORTLAND, Ore. – TJ Haws and Yoeli Childs combined for 39 points as the BYU Cougars cruised to an 83-48 win over Portland Thursday night in West Coast Conference action at the Chiles Center.
It marks the 11th straight loss for the Pilots (7-18, 0-10 WCC), while the Cougars (15-10, 7-3) remain in sole possession of second place in the league standings with the win.
The 48 points were a season-low for Portland. Twelve different Pilots scored, but none reached double figures as sophomore guard Marcus Shaver Jr. led the team with nine points.
Haws scored a game-high 22 points for the Cougars, while Childs added a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
BYU held Portland to 33 percent shooting for the game and the Pilots converted just 13-of-24 free throws. The Cougars shot 46 percent overall.
Turnovers were a problem as Portland committed 20 and forced just 10. BYU gained a 31-8 advantage in points off of turnovers and 36-18 margin in points in the paint.
The Pilots trailed 23-18 with 5:38 left in the first half following a Crisshawn Clark three-pointer, but BYU would close the half on a 17-3 run for a 40-21 halftime lead.
Portland didn't threaten in the second half as the lead grew to as much as 37 points late in regulation.
Portland will continue its homestand with a doubleheader on Saturday. The Pilot women host No. 13 Gonzaga at 4:30 p.m. followed by the men versus Loyola Marymount at 7 p.m. Tickets for all remaining upcoming Pilot home games are available at PortlandPilots.com/Tickets.
