SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. --- The San Francisco Dons scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to overcome the Portland Pilots 2-1 in the West Coast Conference opener on Friday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond. Tracye Tammaro provided Portland's offense with a solo home run.
Â
Tammaro's home run, his second in the last two games, came in the top of the third inning and gave the Pilots a 1-0 lead. The homer to straight away center field broke the scoreless tie as both starting pitchers had solid outings.
Â
The Dons (11-6, 1-0 WCC) provided an answer in the home half of the fourth when Jonathan Allen left the yard with a two-run homer. USF got a couple of more runners on following the home run, but Eli Morse registered a strike out and the Pilots recorded the final out of the inning at home plate to keep the score 2-1.
Â
From there USF starter Riley Ornido (4-1) silenced the Pilot bats en route to his fourth win of the season. He only struck out three, but he yielded just three hits in 8.0 innings. Joey Steele struck out the Pilots in order in the top of the ninth to claim his fourth save of the year.
Â
Morse (2-1) takes the loss after going 7.0 innings. He K'd seven, walked just one, and scattered seven hits. Reliever Christian Peters struck out three in the bottom of the eighth.
Â
The loss snaps a seven-game winning streak for the Pilots (14-5, 0-1 WCC), which was the longest stretch without a loss since 2010.
Â
Game two of the three-game series is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday.
