PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland men's soccer is adding recruits Yusuf Cueceoglu (Koln, Germany/Viktoria Koln/Villanova), Michael Hamilton (Madrid, Spain/Universidad Alcala de Henares/Saginaw Valley State), and Delentz Pierre (Casa Grande, Ariz./Real Salt Lake Academy) to the program, announced head coach Nick Carlin-Voigt. Cueceoglu and Hamilton have already enrolled at the University of Portland and are with the Pilots this spring, while Pierre will come to The Bluff as a freshman in the fall.
A midfielder, Yusuf Cueceoglu spent the past two years at Villanova, finishing second on the team in scoring with six goals and two assists. He made 17 starts as a sophomore, and during his freshman campaign he collected two goals and two assists. He also nabbed Big East Freshman of the Week honors.
Previously, Cueceoglu played in the U19 Bundesliga for Viktoria Koln and started 23 games in 2016-17. He's been capped by the Turkish youth national team on multiple occasions, and he was called into the U.S. U17 national team.
"Yusuf is a very skilled player who can play inside as an attacking interior playmaker or wide at winger who can tuck in or stay wide," said Carlin-Voigt. "He has two years of college experience under his belt playing at Villanova. Yusuf is adjusting to our transitional demands and we are excited to help him improve and fit into our style of play."
Michael Hamilton comes to Portland after a two-year stint at Saginaw Valley State. A forward, Hamilton started all 20 games as a sophomore, and he was named to the All-GLIAC First-Team after registering eight goals and five assists. Hamilton also nabbed United Soccer Coaches All-Midwest Region First-Team honors. As a freshman in 2017, Hamilton was second on the team with 15 points, scoring six goals and adding three assists. He was named the GLIAC Freshman of the Year and was an All-GLIAC First Team forward, while earning all-region second team recognition.
"Michael is a very hardworking, honest winger who has a great team-first attitude," Carlin-Voigt said. "He's a blue-collar player who will push our current wingers as his work rate has been very high in training so far. I've enjoyed working with Michael already this spring as his attitude and approach to training has been fantastic. He has already added to our culture and brings value to our program off the field as well. He fits Portland and program's core values."
Delentz Pierre is a center back who has been at the Salt Lake Academy since 2015. Pierre is ranked as the No. 142 recruit in the country by Top Drawer Soccer, and he represented Haiti at the U20 level.
"Delentz is one of the top left-footed center backs on the west coast as he's been a standout for Real Salt Lake Academy," Carlin-Voigt said. "He's also another top player with Florida roots. He has international experience as well representing Haiti at the U-20 Level in qualifying. When evaluating him our staff thought he had the power and pace to fill the void lost by the graduation of left footed CB Lio Mills. Delentz is left footed as well and can play out of the back, but also has the ability to turn and chase down dynamic attackers. We think he has a very high upside and will only continue to grow and develop in our program."
