PROVO, Utah --- The Brigham Young Cougars completed the three-game West Coast Conference series with an 11-1 win over the Portland Pilots on Saturday afternoon at Miller Park. The win is the third straight for the Cougars over the Pilots.
Â
BYU (17-5, 4-2 WCC) scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning before taking control with a six-run third. Both runs in the first were unearned due to a pair of Portland (15-9, 1-5 WCC) errors, and the Cougars collected three doubles during that third inning.
Â
After the Cougars added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Pilots' lone run came in the top of the fifth. With the bases loaded, Chad Stevens sent a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Travis Turney.
Â
BYU scored their final run in the home half of the fifth.
Â
Starter Nate Packard (2-1) takes the loss after allowing six runs, four earned, on six hits. Relievers Cole Wilkinson, Jacob Biesterfeld, and Christian Peters followed Packard on the mound, with Biesterfeld and Peters combining to hold the Cougars scoreless during the final three innings. Biesterfeld recorded two K's in his one inning of work.
Â
BYU's Justin Sterner (4-2) earns the win, and two relievers helped seal the win.
Â
Next up for the Pilots is a non-conference game with the Oregon State Beavers on Tuesday at Ron Tonkin Field in Hillsboro. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
