HILLSBORO, Ore. --- Four Portland pitchers combined to hold No. 8 Oregon State to just three hits, while striking out 14, as the Pilots toppled the Beavers 5-1 on Tuesday night at Ron Tonkin Field. Cody Hawken provided a two-run single for the Pilots, and Matt Kelly, Hunter Montgomery, and Gabe Skoro also claimed RBI's during the win.
Â
The Pilots (16-9) jumped ahead early in the bottom of the first after senior right-hander Kevin Baker tossed a scoreless top of the frame. Three walks loaded the bases for Kelly, who was plunked by OSU starter Jake Pfennings to force in the game's first run. Next up was Hawken, and he sent a single to left field that scored two and handed the Pilots a 3-0 lead.
Â
Baker struck out two more in the top of the second to preserve the Portland lead, and the Pilots gave their starter more support in the home half of the inning. After the first two batters were retired, Chad Stevens extended the inning by getting hit by a pitch. Daniel Lopez followed with a single to give the Pilots runners on the corners, and Montgomery came through with an RBI single to right-center field to make it a 4-0 game.
Â
The Beavs (16-5-1) got one back with a solo home run in the top of the fourth, but Baker was solid otherwise, allowing just two hits in 4.0 innings. He finished with six K's before the bullpen took over, with reliever Chris Clements coming on to begin the top of the fifth.
Â
Clements (5-0) was stellar in 2.0 scoreless innings of work, striking out two. Cameron Richman pitched a perfect top of the seventh inning, striking out the side on 12 pitches, and junior Connor Knutson took care of the rest. Knutson didn't yield a hit or a walk, while fanning three to seal the win.
Â
Portland's fifth run came in the bottom of the seventh inning when Skoro recorded an RBI infield single with the bases loaded.
Â
The Beavers sent four pitchers to the mound on the night, with the loss going to Pfennings (0-1).
Â
Tomorrow the Pilots return to The Bluff to host Seattle U at Joe Etzel Field, with first pitch is set for 3 p.m.
