PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Gonzaga Bulldogs scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning before holding on to claim a 4-2 comeback win over the Portland Pilots in a West Coast Conference baseball game played on Friday night at Joe Etzel Field. Portland's Chad Stevens went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs during the loss.
Â
Stevens scored his first run in the bottom of the first inning after the Bulldogs had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the frame. Stevens led off with a hard-hit double to the left field corner, moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Matt Kelly, and scored when Daniel Lopez flied out to right.
Â
From there both starting pitchers settled into a groove as Portland's Eli Morse and Gonzaga's Mason Wells kept the other team off the board. The Pilots finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth when Stevens again reached base, this time with an infield single. Kelly then stepped up to the plate, and on a hit-and-run he brought Stevens home all the way from first base with a single to center field. That gave Portland the slight 2-1 edge.
Â
The Bulldogs responded the very next inning, first tying the score with a solo home run off the bat of Ernie Yake. A few batters later, Austin Pinorini provided a go-ahead, two-run triple, making it a 4-2 ballgame.
Â
The Pilots (20-15, 2-11 WCC) did get a runner on base in both the eighth and ninth innings to bring the potential tying run to the plate, but the Bulldogs (15-14, 8-5 WCC) escaped with the road win.
Â
Morse struck out seven in 6.2 innings, but he did allow four runs on nine hits and two walks. Reliever Christian Peters did well to escape a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the eighth with a pair of strike outs and a fly out, and Cameron Richman tossed a perfect top of the ninth.
Â
Wells (1-1) surrendered just the two runs on four hits, and he struck out four without issuing a walk. Alek Jacob took care of the final 2.0 innings, registering four K's to earn his eighth save of the year.
Â
Game two of this three-game series is scheduled for Saturday night at 6 p.m.
