PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Gonzaga Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead before claiming a 19-3 win over the Portland Pilots in a West Coast Conference baseball game played on a wet Saturday night at Joe Etzel Field. Hunter Montgomery homered for the Pilots.
Â
Montgomery's home run, his sixth of the year, came with the bases empty in the bottom of the second inning. He launched a 1-0 pitch over the left field fence, and he matches Matt Kelly and Daniel Lopez for the team-high in homers.
Â
But it was all Gonzaga (16-14, 9-5 WCC) otherwise as they scored at least one run during seven of the nine innings. They led 6-1 after Montgomery left the yard, and they took control of the game with a five-run fourth inning.
Â
The Pilots (20-16, 2-12 WCC) got two runs back in the bottom of the ninth, with the first coming on a double that Chad Stevens sent into the left-center gap. Travis Turney scored all the way from first base on the hit. A few batters later, Stevens came home on a ground-out by Lopez.
Â
Both Ernie Yake and Ryan Sullivan finished with four RBI's to lead the Bulldogs, and Sullivan and Nick Nyquist also homered for the visitors.
Â
The loss goes to Portland starter Kevin Baker (0-4), while Michael Spellacy (2-1) takes the win for the Zags. Spellacy yielded just three hits in 6.0 innings, he allowed only one run, and he K'd four.
Â
The game featured a 35-minute rain delay during the fourth inning.
Â
The Pilots and Bulldogs next play the finale of the three-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
