PORTLAND, Ore. --- After the Pilots scored a run to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Gonzaga Bulldogs plated the winning run in the 11th to overcome Portland 4-3 in a West Coast Conference baseball game played on Sunday afternoon at Joe Etzel Field. Cody Hawken homered for the Pilots during the loss.
Â
Trailing 3-2 in the ninth, Jace McKinney sparked the rally when he sent a pinch-hit single to right field with one out. Hunter Montgomery then reached on a catcher's interference, and McKinney advanced to third base when Chad Stevens flew out to right. Next up was Matt Kelly, and he came through with a clutch single to left, scoring McKinney to tie the score 3-3.
Neither team scored in the 10th inning, and Guthrie Morrison provided the go-ahead, RBI single in the top of the 11th for the Bulldogs. Gonzaga reliever Alek Jacob then retired the Pilots in order in the home half of the frame to give the three-game series sweep to the Zags (17-14, 10-5 WCC).Â
The Bulldogs scored the game's first two runs in the top of the third inning, but Hawken provided an answer in the bottom of the frame. With two outs and Daniel Lopez on first, Hawken left the yard with a two-run homer to left field. His third home run of the year evened the score 2-2.
Â
The game would remain tied all the way until the eighth inning when the Zags capitalized on a lead-off walk. Brett Harris reached on a free pass, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and ended up on third on a single up the middle from Nick Nyquist. Mason Marenco then gave the Zags the lead with a safety squeeze that scored Nyquist.
Â
Blake Porter nearly hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth, but Morrison, Gonzaga's center fielder, made a nice catch at the wall.
Â
The left fielder Hawken also made a clutch play in the field, which came with the score tied 2-2 in the seventh inning. Morrison tried to score from second on a base hit, but Hawken's throw to the plate was in time to keep the score level.
Â
Starter Chris Clements allowed just two runs in 7.0 innings, and Connor Knutson (2-2) worked the final four innings for the Pilots (20-17, 2-13 WCC). Jacob (4-3) claims the win for the Bulldogs after starter Mac Lardner tossed the first 6.0 innings. Jacob pitched five innings of relief, yielding just two hits and an unearned run.
Â
The Pilots next travel south for a three-game WCC series against the San Diego Toreros in San Diego, Calif. The series opens Thursday night at 6 p.m. at Fowler Park.
