SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- The San Diego Toreros jumped out to an early lead before claiming a 10-2 win over the Portland Pilots in a West Coast Conference baseball game played on Friday night at Fowler Park. Portland's Hunter Montgomery homered for the second straight game.
Montgomery's homer, his team-best eighth of the year, came in the fourth inning. The two-out solo shot to left field was the Pilots' second run of the inning after Cody Hawken provided an RBI single earlier in the frame.
But it wasn't enough as San Diego (25-14, 9-8 WCC) scored six runs in the bottom of the first, two more in the fourth, one in the fifth, and another in the seventh en route to the win. Jeff Houghtby finished with three RBI's on the night, while Cody Jefferis and Adam Kerner both drove in a pair of runs.
The Pilots (20-19, 2-15 WCC) used three pitchers, with the loss going to starter Eli Morse (2-6). Only four of the nine runs charged to Morse were earned, Nate Packard tossed 2.0 innings of scoreless relief, and Peter Allegro worked the final 2.0 innings.
San Diego starter Grady Miller (4-2) takes the win, and reliever Louie Crow pitched the final 2.0 innings to help seal the win.
The finale of the three-game league series is set for tomorrow at 1 p.m.
