SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- Cody Hawken hit a grand slam and finished with seven RBI's, Dutton Elske also hit a grand slam and homered twice, and the Pilots limited the Toreros to just one hit as Portland routed San Diego 20-0 in a West Coast Conference series finale played on Saturday afternoon at Fowler Park. Gabe Skoro also homered for the Pilots.
Â
The 20-0 score is believed to be the largest margin of victory during a shutout against a NCAA Division 1 in Portland program history. It's also the second time this season to score 20 runs for the Pilots, who won 20-2 at San Francisco in March.
Â
The run support was more than enough for Portland (21-19, 3-15 WCC) starter Chris Clements (7-1), who was masterful against the Toreros (25-15, 9-9 WCC). Clements worked 8.0 innings, allowed just one hit, and struck out seven. Reliever Connor Knutson took over in the ninth to finish off the one-hit shutout.
Â
The Pilots plated their first run in the top of the second inning, and they'd go on to score at least one run during each of the final six innings. Hawken was responsible for the run in the second when his first of two doubles on the day brought home Daniel Lopez.
Hawken added to his RBI total in the top of the fifth inning when he left the yard with the bases loaded. The blast is Hawken's fourth homer of the year, and it gave the Pilots a 7-0 lead.
Â
Jace McKinney added to Portland's lead with an RBI triple in the bottom of the sixth, and Matt Kelly collected an RBI with a sac fly. Chad Stevens made it a 10-0 game with a run-scoring single in the seventh.
Â
In the eighth inning, the Pilots scored nine runs, which was fueled by a grand slam from Elske and a three-run shot off the bat of Skoro. Hawken also tallied a couple of RBI's during the frame with his second double of the afternoon, and the long fly from Skoro is his first career homer.
Â
An inning later, Elske produced his second home run of the game, this one coming with the bases empty to push the Portland lead to 20 runs.
Â
The Pilots finished with a season-high 19 hits, with Stevens leading the way with four hits. Hawken becomes the second Portland player this year to drive in seven runs, joining Kelly who accomplished the feat during that win at USF.
Â
San Diego used seven pitchers, and the loss goes to starter Anthony Donatella (2-1).
Â
The Pilots next step out of conference to host the Washington Huskies at Jot Etzel Field on Tuesday. First pitch with the Huskies is set for 6 p.m.
