SAN JOSE, Calif. --- Cody Hawken, Matt Kelly, and Daniel Lopez each homered for the Pilots, and pitchers Nate Packard and Cameron Richman combined to allow only five hits as Portland cruised past the San Jose State Spartans 13-2 in a non-conference game played on Monday afternoon at Excite Ballpark. Lopez finished with five RBI's, while Kelly scored four runs.
Â
The Pilots (20-14) combined for 18 hits overall, with Gabe Skoro leading the way with four hits. Kelly, Lopez, and Chad Stevens each tallied three hits.
Â
Portland jumped out to an early lead as they scored 12 runs during the first three innings. Lopez claimed his first RBI with a single in the top of the first, and Hawken followed with a three-run blast to make it a 4-0 game. It's the second homer this season for Hawken.
Â
The lead would grow as the Pilots plated five more in the top of the second inning. Kelly singled in a run, Stevens trotted home on a wild pitch, and Lopez left the yard with a two-run shot to left field, his sixth homer of the year. Skoro would add an RBI single before the inning was done.
Â
Lopez doubled to left-center field in the top of the third inning, which scored two more runs, and Blake Porter drove in a run with a single as the Pilots were in control 12-0.
Â
Kelly was responsible for Portland's final run when he belted a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning. The homer is Kelly's sixth this spring, which matches Lopez for the team-high.
Â
The run support was more than enough for Packard, who improves to 3-1 on the year. He started and lasted 7.0 innings, allowing just two runs on four hits. Richman took care of the final 2.0 innings.
Â
The loss goes to Ben Polack (1-3), who was one of seven pitchers used by the Spartans (17-16). Polack worked just one inning, yielding four runs on four hits.
Â
The Pilots next return to The Bluff to host the Gonzaga Bulldogs for a three-game West Coast Conference series this weekend at Joe Etzel Field. Friday's opener is set for 6 p.m.
