PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland's Cody Hawken belted a three-run homer and the Pilots held the No. 11 Beavers to just four hits on the night, but Oregon State prevailed 4-3 in a non-conference baseball game played on Tuesday night at Goss Stadium.
Â
The home run is Hawken's sixth of the season, and it came in the top of the third inning with the Pilots (24-26) trailing 1-0. With one out, Matt Kelly reached on a walk, and Daniel Lopez followed with a single to right-center field. Hawken then stepped to the plate and left the yard with a shot to left field to hand the visitors their first lead of the night.
Â
For a while it looked like the lead would stand as Portland starter Christian Peters retired 12 straight during one stretch and didn't allow a hit for four straight innings. OSU did score one in the top of the first inning on a double and a single, but those were the only blemishes on the night for Peters.
Â
Reliever Cameron Richman continued what Peters started with a scoreless sixth inning, but the Beavs did load the bases in the bottom of the seventh. George Mendazona then greeted new Portland pitcher Connor Knutson with a bases clearing double, handing the Beavers the one-run lead.
Â
And that's the way the game would end as the Beavers (34-15-1) didn't allow a Portland batter to reach base during the final 2.0 innings.
Â
Richman (1-2) is saddled with the loss, while Nathan Burns (2-0) takes the win for the Beavers. Jake Mulholland registered the final two outs to collect his seventh save of the year.
Â
The Pilots next travel to Stockton, Calif., to conclude the season with a three-game West Coast Conference series against the Pacific Tigers. Weather may affect the schedule at Klein Family Field, but as of right now Friday's opener is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
