STOCKTON, Calif. --- The Pilots rallied to win game one before the Tigers won the second game in extra innings as Portland and Pacific split a double header to open their West Coast Conference series on Friday at Klein Family Field. The Pilots claimed a 6-3 win before Pacific took the nightcap 6-5.
Â
Down 3-2 to begin the top of the ninth inning of game one, Chad Stevens led off with a double before moving to third on a ground out. Daniel Lopez then doubled to score Stevens, and the Pilots were even with the Tigers. Following an intentional walk, Tracye Tammaro came through with an RBI double to left center field, and just like that the Pilots had the lead.
Â
Next up was Jace McKinney, and he sent a single to the gap in left center, scoring both Cody Hawken and Tammaro to give the Pilots the three-run edge. From there the Tigers got out of the inning, and Christian Peters pitched a scoreless bottom of the ninth to seal the win.
Â
Peters registers his first save of the year, and reliever Peter Allegro improves to 4-0. Allegro worked 4.0 innings of relief after replacing starter Kevin Baker, and he limited the Tigers to a run on two hits, while striking out a pair. Baker yielded just two runs during the first 4.0 innings, and he K'd three.
Â
Reliever Lucas Sweany (2-3) takes the loss for Pacific.
Â
The Tigers scored the game's first run in the bottom of the first, but the Pilots answered in the top of the second. Henry Cheney singled before scoring on an error to pull the Pilots level, 1-1. Tammaro then homered in the top of the fifth inning to briefly hand the Pilots the lead. His fifth home run of the year made it 2-1, but the Tigers scored a run in the home half of the frame and another in the sixth to claim a slight edge.
Â
Portland (25-27, 7-19 WCC) jumped on top in the second game with a run in the top of the first, but Pacific (23-26, 10-16 WCC) responded with five runs in the bottom of the inning. Stevens was responsible for the Pilots' run in the first inning when he led off with a solo homer.
Â
The five runs in the bottom of the first were all the Tigers could produce, as Portland starter Connor Knutson didn't allow another run during the next 5.0 innings.
Â
At the plate the Pilots chipped away at the deficit, beginning with a Travis Turney RBI ground out in the top of the fifth. Portland scored two more in the sixth on a Tammaro RBI single and a ground out by McKinney that plated Hawken to make it a one-run game.
Â
The next inning Turney left the yard with his first home run of the season, completing the comeback and tying the score 5-5.
Â
After neither team could provide the winning run, the Pilots loaded the bases to begin the top of the 10th. The Tigers, though, were able to record three straight outs to avoid any damage, and in the bottom of the inning they scored the game-winner without the benefit of getting a hit. A walk and two hit batters filled the bases, and Kevi Sandri gave the win to the home team with a sacrifice fly.
Â
Peters (3-4) is saddled with the loss, while Joseph Standley picks up the win (3-1).
Â
The Pilots and Tigers have tomorrow off before taking the diamond on Sunday for the season finale, which is slated to begin 1 p.m.
