SEATTLE, Wash. --- After Hunter Montgomery had given the Pilots the lead with a two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning, the Washington Huskies scored four in the bottom of the eighth to prevail 10-8 over Portland in a non-conference game played on Wednesday night at Husky Ballpark. Daniel Lopez also homered for the Pilots.
Â
The Pilots (23-23) and Huskies (24-19) entered the top of the seventh inning tied 6-6. After Henry Cheney reached on an error, Montgomery stepped up to the plate and left the yard with his team-best ninth home run of the year.
Â
The 8-6 lead would stand until the bottom of the eighth inning. That's when the Huskies loaded the bases, and Ramon Bramasco made it a one-run game with an RBI, infield single. Rollie Nichols then cleared the bases with a three-run triple to right field, and the Huskies held on for the win.
Â
Portland's Connor Knutson (2-3) take the loss after allowing four runs in 2.0 innings of work. Chris Micheles (5-2) picks up the win, and Stevie Emanuels pitched a scoreless ninth, striking out two, to notch his fourth save of the year.
Â
The Pilots jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the top of the second inning and two more in the third. Tracye Tammaro provided a two-run single in the second to make it a 2-0 ballgame, and Lopez belted his eighth homer of the year in the third, which was two-run shot to left field. The Huskies did score one in the bottom of the second, but the Pilots still led 4-1.
Â
Portland added another run in the top of the fourth and another in the fifth, but Washington plated two runs during the home half of both those innings to keep the game close. Matt Kelly claimed an RBI in the fourth when he reached on a fielder's choice and Tammaro scored. In the fifth with runners on second and third, Montgomery singled to center field to bring home Lopez. Cody Hawken also appeared to score on the hit, but he was called out at the plate.
Â
UW then capitalized on a Portland error in the bottom of the sixth, the Pilots' fourth of the night, to score an unearned run and even the score 6-6.
Â
The Pilots next return home to host the Pepperdine Waves for a three-game West Coast Conference series this weekend at Joe Etzel Field. First pitch for Friday night's series opener is set for 6 p.m.
