SEATTLE, Wash. --- The Portland Pilots opened the season by claiming a point on the road with a 0-0 draw against the Washington Huskies in a women's soccer non-conference game played on Friday night at Husky Soccer Stadium. The Pilots created a handful of opportunities throughout the night but were ultimately unable to find the back of the net.
Â
Freshman keeper Jenny Wahlen started in goal for the Pilots, and the native of Sweden made several stellar saves on the night to preserve the tie. She finished with seven stops overall as the Pilots begin the season 0-0-1.
Â
Wahlen was solid in the first half coming through with a handful of impressive saves to keep the game scoreless. At the other end of the field, Larkin Russell had Portland's best scoring opportunity of the first half in the 16th minute. The senior had possession inside the box before putting a strike on frame, but the UW keeper was there for the save.
Â
Portland controlled possession for much of the second half, and Elliott Winkelmann provided the first shot after the break, which was blocked in the 48th minute.
Â
Wahlen continued to deny every Washington (0-0-1) shot, including in the 68th in the 73rd minutes. The stop in the 73rd came on an awkward ball that was heading towards the top shelf, but she punched it safely over the cross bar.
Â
The Pilots earned a corner in the 77th minute, and Russell made a nice run up the middle of the field in the 79th minute. Taryn Ries found the midfielder with a square ball, but Russell's hit from just outside the 18-yard box was high of the frame as the two teams would head to overtime.
Â
Neither team created many opportunities during the extra time, as Portland held on for the point.
Â
Next week the Pilots travel back to Seattle for the 2019 Husky Invitational. Portland opens the invite against New Mexico on Thursday night, with kickoff slated for 4 p.m. at Husky Soccer Stadium. Sunday brings a match-up with No. 2 Carolina, and that game is set to begin at 11:30 a.m.
