SEATTLE, Wash. --- Junior Taryn Ries scored the game's only goal in the 27th minute and the Pilots registered their second straight shutout as they defeated the New Mexico Lobos 1-0 at the Husky Invitational on Thursday evening at Husky Soccer Stadium. It's the first goal and game-winner this year for Ries, who ranked in the top-10 nationally last season in both those categories.
Â
Ries' goal came after the Pilots (1-0-1) survived an early surge by the Lobos (1-1-0) during the match's first 25 minutes. On a ball played in by Larkin Russell from the left wing, Ries took a touch just inside the top of the 18-yard box, let it bounce, and buried a strike into the back of the net. Her world-class goal gave the Pilots a 1-0 lead.
Â
The lead would stand as the Pilots denied every New Mexico chance all game long. Freshman goalkeeper Jenny Wahlen finished with three saves to collect her second consecutive clean sheet. The native of Borlange, Sweden, begins her collegiate career with a scoreless streak of 200 minutes after the Pilots earned a 0-0 draw with Washington during last week's season-opener.
Â
Another Portland freshman, Selma Licina, had the Pilots' best scoring chance in the second half, which came in the 56th minute. Ries had possession inside the right side of the box, got around the corner of the defense, and sent a low cross toward the near post. That's where Licina got a touch on it, but she pushed her shot wide as the Pilots' edge remain 1-0.
Â
Two of Wahlen's saves came during the opening half, including a stellar stop just before the break. New Mexico's Maysa Walters tried to sneak a shot past the keeper in the 43rd minute, but Whalen slid to her left to make the stop as she fell to the ground.
Â
Wahlen's lone save in the second half happened in the 52nd minute as the Pilots did well to limit the Lobos' opportunities.
Â
Next up for the Pilots is a game with the No. 2 North Carolina Tar Heels, which is set for Sunday at 11:30 a.m. at Husky Soccer Stadium.
