McMinnville, Ore.--- The Portland men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2019 season by sweeping the team titles at the Linfield Harrier Classic earlier this morning. The Portland women placed four runners in the top five, while three men were among the five best in their event.

Beginning her freshman campaign as a Pilot, Ellie Misuraca claimed Portland's first individual win of the year, finishing the women's 4K race in a time of 15:34.5.

Following close behind was fellow freshman Grace Oswin, collecting third place with her time of 15:50.3. Teammates Ellee Becker and Emily Bechen secured fourth place and fifth place, crossing the line with times of 15:56.8 and 16:15.1, respectively. Senior Allegra Vanderwilde closed out all scorers for Portland, while garnering a new personal best of 17:07.2.

"Everyone ran great today," said women's head coach Ian Solof. "I was really impressed with how the team competed and I can see tons of improvement from last year."

On the men's side, it was freshman Cameron Thompson who led for Portland, finishing second overall with a time of 19:34.4 in the 6K race. Seniors Trent Mazelli and Matt Schumann were the second and third men for the Pilots. Mazelli finishing in 19:48.5 for fourth place, and Schumann in 19:49.9 for fifth. Also finishing for the Pilots were Aaron Letcher (19:53.7), Jake Knoblich (19:57.6), and Kris Braunberger (20:01.0).
"The team got off to a great start," said men's head coach Rob Conner. "I was really impressed with everyone but Cameron was the biggest surprise. All the guys have worked hard this summer and it showed today."
