PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots continued to create quality chances and dominated possession all game long, but the Seattle U Redhawks scored the game-winning goal in the 91st minute to escape Merlo Field with a 3-2 victory on a wet Sunday afternoon. MJ Roe and Taryn Ries scored Portland's two goals.
Â
Roe's goal came in the 28th minute after the Redhawks had taken an early lead. Jamie Rita played a perfectly-timed through ball to Roe, and the freshman forward took a touch before hammering a shot from about 16 yards out that snuck just under the cross bar and leveled the score 1-1. It's the second goal this year for Roe, while Rita claims her first assist as a Pilot.
Â
Kelsey Vogel had previously given Seattle U (4-3-1) the lead when she found the back of the net with a header off a corner from Gabe Jillings in the eighth minute.
Â
The Redhawks' second goal came against the run of play, and it was Ava Benedetti who finished with a strike from outside the 18-yard box. Bailey Hall played in the initial ball, which found Jessie Ray at the top of the area. Ray then connected with Benedetti, and she gave the lead back to the visiting side with her first goal this season.
Â
From there, the Pilots did well to limit Seattle's chances, while continuing to knock on the door throughout the second half. Ries began the second half by hitting a header wide after Kimberly Hazlett sent a dangerous ball towards the far post.
Â
Moments later, Ries earned PK for the Pilots after getting fouled inside the box. Gabi Brummett set up the play with a stellar through ball, and Ries easily slotted in the penalty to make it a 2-2 game.
Â
The Pilots then nearly produced the go-ahead go multiple times, including in the 69th minute when Ries made a long run with possession down the left touch line. After the 40-yard run, she cut inside and hit a shot that was denied by the Seattle U keeper, Madison Waguespack.
Â
Brianna Miyama hit a hard, low bouncing shot that was saved by Waguespack in the 73rd minute, and Ries and Rita combined for perhaps the best chance of the second half in the 80th minute. Ries did well to get inside the area with possession before finding an unmarked Rita near the top of the six-yard box. Rita then hit the crossbar with a shot from point-blank range as the match remained tied.
Â
Anja Koehler sent a powerful header wide in the 83rd minute, and the two sides eventually went to overtime.
Â
The Redhawks quickly went to work during the extra time, and 44 seconds in Kelsey Crosby sent a strike inside the left post for the game-winner after combining on a give-and-go with Jessie Ray.
Â
The Pilots (2-2-2) finished with a 17-10 edge in shots, and Portland had 11 corners to SU's two.
Â
It's the fifth straight game to go to overtime in the Portland-Seattle series, and both teams had their Friday night games go to extra time as well.
Â
Next up for the Pilots is a road trip to Northern California, where they open with a match against the San Jose Spartans on Friday night. Kickoff at the Spartan Soccer Complex in San Jose is set for 7 p.m.
