PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Portland men's and women's cross country teams fared well at the Bill Dellinger Invitational on Saturday at Pine Ridge Golf Club, with both teams combining for a handful of PRs on the day.
Â
In the men's 8K, the team totaled 182 points for fifth place in the team scores. Sophomore Justin Hazell finished first for the Pilots in 23:53.9, a new personal best which was good for 13
thplace overall. Reuben Kiprono was next with his time of 24:16.0, and Portland newcomer George Duggan was close behind at 24:21.8. Joey Duerr and Joe Horen were Portland's last scorers, and crossed soon after at 24:31.0 and 24:48.9, respectively.
"The guys really got the job done today. I was very proud of everyone. The only objective was to beat some of the teams from other regions who are likely to qualify for nationals. I think we did that, big time," said men's head coach Rob Conner. "Justin really broke out and Reuben and George ran super tough. Those guys led us for sure."
Â
In the women's 6K, the Pilots finished eighth in the team total, but it was Anna Pataki who led the way with her personal record of 20:19.5 for 14
thplace individually. Emma Jenkins (20:35.3) and Jasmine Fehr (20:54.9) each claimed new best times as well, while Lacey Conner (21:03.4) and Victoria Weir (21:09.2 - PR) were the last to score for the Pilots. Sofia Castiglioni (21:19.7), Maddy Lyons (21:21.8), and Ellie Erikson (22:08.5) also claimed new individual PRs at the meet.Â
"I was really proud of how the team competed today. Everyone ran tough and moved up well at the end," said women's head coach Ian Solof. "To finish right between two ranked teams is excellent. Anna Pataki ran an amazing race, moving up the whole way, and Emma Jenkins and Lacey Conner were both really strong as well."
Â
Both the men's and women's teams are back in action next weekend on Saturday, October 5
th, at the Charles Bowles Invitational, hosted by Willamette University at Bush's Pasture Park in Salem, Ore.
