PORTLAND, Ore. – Malcolm Porter scored a career high 17 points, but Portland struggled offensively in a 65-55 loss to the Pacific Tigers on Thursday night in West Coast Conference basketball action at the Chiles Center.
The Pilots (9-10, 1-3 WCC) entered the game ranked 24th nationally in three-point percentage (.379) but finished the night just 1-for-5 from beyond the arc. Portland shot just 33 percent from the floor as a team.
The Tigers (15-5, 3-1) have now won six games in a row against Portland and move alone into third place in the league standings. Senior Jahlil Tripp finished with 15 points, 14 rebounds, seven assists and three steals while logging all 40 minutes.
Porter was 5-for-8 from the field and made all six of his free throws in recording a career high for the second game in a row. He finished with 16 points on Saturday at BYU.
Freshman point guard Chase Adams joined Porter in double figures with 14 points, while Tahirou Diabate added nine points and eight rebounds.
Portland's two leading scorers, Isaiah White and JoJo Walker, came into the game averaging a combined 23.7 points per game but were held to just five points on Thursday.
The first half featured six ties and six lead changes before the Tigers surged late. Adams had eight first half points, but the Pilots were unable to take advantage at the free throw line, going just 9-for-16 in the first period and trailed 28-25 at the break.
Diabate opened the second half with a pair of baskets at the rim and Portland cut the deficit to one point twice before the Tigers used a 9-1 run to push the margin to double digits. Tripp accounted for four points, two assists and a steal during the run.
Porter made six straight free throws to pull Portland within 44-38, but back-to-back dunks by James Hampshire gave the Tigers some breathing room and Portland would get no closer than seven the rest of the way.
Pacific gained a 34-20 advantage in points in the paint and 22-10 margin in bench points.
Portland will return to the Chiles Center on Saturday night to host the San Diego Toreros at 7 p.m. That game will be aired on the WCC Network and 910 ESPN-Portland (KMTT). Tickets are still available by calling 503-943-4687 or visiting
