PORTLAND, Ore. – The San Diego Toreros scored 52 second half points to overcome a halftime deficit and beat the Portland Pilots 77-67 Saturday in West Coast Conference men's basketball action at the Chiles Center.
The Toreros (1-5, 8-13 WCC) shot 58 percent from the floor after the break and led by as much as 16 points late in regulation.
JoJo Walker scored a team-high 14 points off the bench to lead the Pilots (9-11, 1-4). Isaiah White finished with 13 points and Tahirou Diabate added 11 points. Jacob Tryon just missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.
The teams traded early runs as the Pilots went up 13-4 sparked by 11 unanswered points. White had five points and Tryon four points during the run. San Diego came out of a timeout and responded with a 7-0 spurt and would close the half trailing 27-25.
Calcaterra hit a runner and three-pointer on consecutive possessions to highlight a 10-0 run midway through the second half as San Diego surged ahead.
Walker scored five straight with a pair of jumpers to pull the Pilots back within 54-44. The Pilots cut the deficit to eight after Malcolm Porter converted a steal and layup with 2:42 remaining, but Portland came up empty on the next three possessions as USD extended its lead.
The Toreros outrebounded Portland by a 24-15 margin in the second half and shot 46 percent overall, while limiting the Pilots to 44 percent. Three-pointers and free throws proved to be the difference. USD was 10-of-22 from three-point range and 15-for-24 at the charity stripe, while Portland was just 5-for-16 from three and 6-of-14 at the foul line.
Jared Rodriguez scored a game-high 17 points off the bench to lead four Toreros in double figures, while Yauhen Massalski grabbed 14 rebounds.
Portland continues WCC play with a three-game road trip beginning at Loyola Marymount on Thursday at 7 p.m. The Pilots will visit Pepperdine on Saturday 5 p.m. and then head to Saint Mary's on Jan. 30.
