MORAGA, Calif. – Tahirou Diabate had his second straight solid game for Portland with 18 points, but Saint Mary's showed why it is one of the most efficient offensive teams in the nation in an 86-64 victory over the Pilots Thursday night at University Credit Union Pavilion.
Malik Fitts scored a game-high 27 points and Jordan Ford added 21 for the Gaels (19-4, 6-2 WCC) who remain alone in second place in the West Coast Conference standings with the victory. The Pilots (9-14, 1-7) have now lost six games in a row.
Portland again dealt with injuries as Malcolm Porter missed his third straight game and Lavar Harewood was also unavailable.
Diabate, coming off a career-high 25 points at Pepperdine on Saturday, was a threat at both ends of the court against Saint Mary's with 16 points, six rebounds and four blocked shots. He was 7-of-8 shooting from the field.
Isaiah White finished with 17 points for Portland, but no other Pilot reached double figures.
The Gaels were deadly on offense, shooting 53 percent overall and making 18 three-pointers. The Pilots finished at 48 percent and 5-of-18 from three-point range.
Saint Mary's forced 14 Pilot turnovers and gained a 19-8 edge in points off turnovers.
The Gaels hit 4-of-5 three-pointers to start the game and jumped out to a 19-point lead in the first half. Saint Mary's closed the period with a 47-30 lead, despite 12 first half points from White.
Portland got within 15 points on a layup from Chase Adams early in the second half, but Saint Mary's used a 12-2 run to push the margin up to 25 points as the shooting onslaught continued for the Gaels.
