PORTLAND, Ore. --- After the Pilots remained within reach of No. 9 Oregon during the first half, the Ducks out-scored Portland by 18 in the third quarter and would go on to claim an 85-52 win in a non-conference women's basketball game played on Monday night at the Chiles Center. The Pilots were led by sophomore forward Alex Fowler, who finished with 12 points.
Â
The Pilots (1-1) gave the Ducks (2-0) all they could handle in the first quarter as it was only a two-point game after Maddie Muhlheim drove to the hoop and finished. The Oregon lead was still only two points moments later when Fowler converted down low, but the Ducks ended the quarter with a 7-0 run to claim a nine-point edge.
Â
Oregon did push their lead to double digits early in the second, but the Pilots refused to go away. Rose Pflug gained possession at the top of the key before backing down and hitting a turn-around jumper to pull the Pilots with nine. After that the Ducks again tried to pull away, but again Portland had an answer. This time it was Liana Kaitu'u who drilled a three from beyond the arc, and just like that the deficit was down to 10.
Â
The Ducks did respond by surging ahead by 17 points, but Keeley Frawley buried a three-pointer and Fowler followed with a lay-up, and the Oregon lead was only 34-22 at the half.
Â
In the third the Ducks took control, claiming a 29-11 edge during the quarter to surge ahead by 30. The Pilots then largely used their bench in the final period, and Portland did well to deny the Ducks from extending their lead.
Â
10 different Pilots scored as every available player saw time on the court. Muhlheim finished with seven points, and Lauren Walker, Kristina Wooldridge, and Kaitu'u each added six. Portland was without the services of starting point guard and Preseason All-WCC selection Haylee Andrews, who missed the game with an injury.
Â
Erin Boley led three Ducks in double figures with a game-high 25 points.
Â
Next for the Pilots is a home game with the Seattle U Redhawks on Sunday afternoon at the Chiles Center. Tip-off is set for 12 p.m., and the contest will be broadcast live on NBC Sports Northwest. The Pilots defeated the Redhawks 82-70 in the season opener last Wednesday in Seattle.
