PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland's Alex Fowler poured in 20 points, Maddie Muhlheim drained five three-pointers and finished with 17 points, and Haylee Andrews just missed a double-double as the Pilots pulled away from the Seattle U Redhawks to win 80-68 on Sunday afternoon at the Chiles Center. Freshman McKelle Meek also just missed scoring in double digits for the first time, finishing with nine points.
Â
The game was close throughout the first three quarters, and the Portland lead was only three points early in the fourth. That's when freshman Tyler McCliment-Call connected on a pull-up jumper, Keeley Frawley converted a pair of free throws, and Andrews found Fowler for a lay-in as the Pilots pushed their edge to nine.
Â
Moments later Andrews found Fowler again for a bucket before drilling a three-pointer from the top of the key to make it 64-52 with 6:11 left to play. Portland held on to their lead from there, and when Liana Kaitu'u buried a corner three, the Pilots' advantage had grown to 15 points. Then with just over three minutes showing on the clock, Muhlheim connected again from deep to make it a 19-point game, putting it out of reach for the Redhawks.
Â
This is second win for Portland (2-1) over Seattle U (1-3) in the past two weeks.
Â
Fowler reaches 20 points for the first time this season, and she corralled six rebounds. Andrews collected 11 assists, which just missed matching a career high by one, and she finished with a team-best eight boards.
Â
Kaitu'u and Frawley also scored nine points, and the Pilots combined for 11 three-pointers for the day.
Â
McKenzi Williams led four Redhawks to score in double figures with 18 points, and Chinwe Ezeonu claimed a game-high 19 rebounds.
Â
The first half was closely contested, and it was the Pilots who led 30-27 at the break. Portland tried to pull away in the third quarter as they led by seven three times, but the Redhawks were able to hang around. Muhlheim hit two from behind the arc in the third, and Fowler scored eight points to help the Pilots take a five-point lead to the fourth.
Â
Next for the Pilots is a visit from the Northwest University Eagles on Friday night at the Chiles Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
