SEATTLE, Wash. --- The Pilots stayed within reach of the Huskies for most of the afternoon, but Washington used an early run in the fourth quarter to pull away and claim an 83-56 win over Portland on Sunday at Alaska Airlines Arena. Haylee Andrews led the Pilots with 13 points, and Maddie Muhlheim finished with 12.
Â
Muhlheim was hot early as the senior guard was 3-for-3 from three-point range in the first quarter. Andrews also connected from deep in the opening frame, and the Pilots (3-2) were within seven points of the Huskies going to the second.
Â
Andrews began the second quarter with a nice drive down the lane, finishing with the left hand, and she found Lauren Walker under the hoop for a lay-in to make it a three-point game. Moments later Andrews again converted a lay-up to help keep the Pilots within three, but the Huskies would soon use a 9-0 run to open a double-digit lead. UW led 34-24 at the break, and Muhlheim had a game-high nine points.
Â
The Pilots started the third quarter with a fast break, which was finished with a lay-up by Keeley Frawley, and Andrews soon followed with a three-pointer from the left wing as Portland tried to keep the game close. The Huskies responded with a 7-0 surge to build a 16-point edge, but Emme Shearer ended the Portland drought by draining a corner three.
Â
Shearer then connected on two more buckets to score seven straight points for the Pilots, and Alex Fowler added a traditional three-point play after securing the offensive board to cut the deficit to 10.
Â
But the Huskies took a 55-43 lead to the fourth, and their advantage would grow from there as they scored the first 12 points of the period. UW then continued to knock down shots in final quarter, and they'd combine to shoot a blistering 65 percent for the game to seal the win.
Â
Six players scored in double figures for the Huskies (4-2), and Quay Miller led the way with 21 points.
Â
The Pilots next return home to host the Montana State Bobcats on Thursday afternoon, with tip-off scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Chiles Center.
